Michael O'Brien Match Report

In a fantastic game of junior hurling St Catherine's well beaten in last years East Cork final pulled this out of the fire in ordinary time to force the match to extra time.

In a fiercely fought game from the throw in, there was never more than a few points in it at any time, as free takers supreme Shane O'Brien and John Cashman fought it out from the word go, with both converting 65's within a minute of each other. The opening goal came on the 5th minute when half back Conor Hegarty received a short puck out and soloed the length of the field and found Richie Galvan with a pin point pass who side stepped his man and rattled the rigging.

Lisgoold responded with three scores on the trot all from placed balls the pick been a long range one from the Cul Barra Ciaran Cronin. It was tit for tat for the remainder of the half as Cashman planted the frees but St Catherine's Dan Mangan counteracted this with three superb points from play to leave the sides level at the short whistle.

it was the same story for the opening 15 minutes of the second half Lisgoold would go ahead and St Catherine's would reel them in. slowly Lisgoold started to open a gap as the wides started to pile up for the Ballynoe men and following a great brake out of defence Brian Clifford off loaded to Cashman and he duly obliged for Lisgoold to go three clear with as many minutes left on the clock.

St Catherine's went looking for the equaliser but to no avail then with a last effort O'Brien floated the ball into the square with 61 minutes on the clock Rory Galvan rose highest and got a goal from yester year as he doubled it to the net to set the scene for extra time.

In Extra time St Catherine's found a new confidence but found it hard to shake off Lisgoold, then with 3 minutes to the short whistle Mangan put St Catherine's ahead for the 1st time in an hour with a mighty point and from the resulting puck out he won the ball again and found Richie O'Connell who billowed the net. A minute later Cashman made it a three point game with his 17th point of the game.

In the 2nd period of extra time Lisgoold poured forward to no avail then when Rory Galvan put the Ballynoe men five points ahead as the long whistle loomed it looked all over. the 20th Cashman point followed to pull one back then Liam O'Shea the Cork minor struck for a goal and it was game on again but it was the Ballynoe men who held the head as Conor Hegarty who won the puck out and duly converted a long range point to put the issue beyond doubt.
