Lisgoold nudge out Cloyne in close contest in JAFC

Lisgoold have defeated Cloyne in the opening round of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship on a score of 1-9-3-1 in a tightly contested battle in Ballinacurra.

Lisgoold began the game the much better out of the two sides with full forward John Cashman scoring the opening point of the game after three minutes of play. It was all Lisgoold as with five minutes gone Jack Ryan finished off a brilliantly put together piece of play to score the first goal of the game. John Cashman was proving a menace for the Cloyne backs scoring his second point of the game after six minutes. Cloyne started to come into the game, scoring a goal through Paudie O’Sullivan, his first goal of two on the day. The next point of the game came twelve minutes later, the longest period of the game without a score. The scorer was wing back Brendan O’Flynn.

From the resulting kick out Cloyne won the ball and broke before winning a penalty after a Cloyne man was brought down. Paudie stepped up to take it and slotted it into the bottom right hand corner past Lisgoold keeper Darragh Desmond, his second of the day. Lisgoold responded quickly through Jack Ryan to restore their lead. The game turned sour in the final in the final few minutes of the first half, with two Cloyne men picking up two yellow cards in quick succession, first Colm O’Sullivan a push on Maurice O’Connell, before Ian Cahill got booked for kicking the ball away after conceding a free. At half time Lisgoold led 1-4-2-0 Cloyne.

The second half began with frees a plenty, seven in total, six conceded by Cloyne and  one conceded by Lisgoold, including a black card for Cloyne’s Dillion Cahill with Jack Hallahan replacing him on the pitch. The first point of the second half came through John Cashman after eight minutes of the half. He was playing a blinder in full forward and added yet another from a free two minutes later. Cloyne got their third goal of the day after a superb finish from Colm O’Sullivan, to level the match yet again after forty- two minutes.

John Cashman kept his good form going putting over his fifth point of the game with little over twelve minutes left of normal time. Ian Cahill managed to nudge Cloyne level as the game entered the final stretch, Cloyne’s first point of the game after fifty-one minutes. It would turn out to be Cloyne’s final score of the match. Cashman popped up with another two frees in quick succession to round off Lisgoold’s scoring, the second free coming after Domhall O’Sullivan was sent off for shoving a Lisgoold player in an off the ball incident.

Lisgoold hung on in added time to win, in a game which produced forty-five frees, a black card, two yellow cards and one red card. It finished in Ballinacurra in the East Cork Junior A Football Championship Lisgoold 1-9-3-1 Cloyne.
