Derek Kiely in Killeagh

CARRIGTWOHILL staged a great second half turnaround to defeat their great rivals Midleton last Saturday evening in Killeagh in the first round of the ‘Michael O’Connor Motor Factors’ JAFC.

It was a pretty even opening quarter between the sides and it took nine minutes for the first score to be registered and it came off the boot of a Declan Ryan free on a nippy night at Páirc Uí Chinneide.

From the resulting kick out Cormac Beausang was quickest to react and he sent the ball right back over the Carrigtwohill bar and Midleton led by two points.

Carrigtwohill’s first point came on the 14th minute from an Eoghan O’Mahony free and then a minute later the sides were level after Liam O’Sullivan pointed from play.

Carrig brought some handling free’s against themselves towards the end of the first half and Ryan was on hand to punish on two occasions and on the stroke of half time Seamus O’Farrell pointed to leave the ‘Magpies’ three points up at the short whistle.

Ten minutes had gone in the second half and both sides had exchanged a point each to still see Midleton lead it by two, but then another moment of indiscipline by Seamus O’Farrell saw the Midleton wing back receive his second yellow card and he had to leave the field and there is no doubt that this was a turning point in the game.

Matty Foley who was introduced before half time for Carrigtwohill had a huge impact scoring two key points from play midway through the second half levelling the match for the second time.

Eoghan O’Mahony then scored two magnificent frees and Carrig added two further points to lead it by four points with just five minutes remaining.

Midleton weren’t done just yet and when Paudie O’Shea punched home a Midleton goal on the 59th minute it caused Carrigtwohill to panic and Midleton did squander some very easy chances to go to extra time, but in the end Carrigtwohill held out for the victory.
