ST CATHERINES were the first club to tastes championship victory last Friday night in the opening match in the ‘Michael O’Connor Motor Factors’ East Cork JAFC with a narrow win over Lisgoold in Ballynoe.

The first half was very entertaining as the two number fourteen’s, John Cashman from Lisgoold and Daniel Mangan from St Catherines traded points instantly and the two talismans would score heavily throughout the match.

Lisgoold’s poor discipline cost them dearly at times and on the fifth minute they conceded a penalty and Andrew O’Donovan was lucky to stay on the pitch, plus the loss of Eoin O’Sullivan for a ‘Black Card’ offence on the 23rd minute didn’t help the Lisgoold cause.

Mangan had no problem dispatching the ball into the net and the Saints had an early three point advantage. It was an exhilarating opening 30 minutes with John Cashman carrying the Lisgoold challenge with an almost faultless first half performance and it was through his scoring that Lisgoold took the lead in the match just before half time with seven points to a goal and three points which they held until the short whistle in a first half where Cashman and Mangan scored all the points between them.

The standard of the game dropped dramatically in the second half with only three points scored in the opening eleven minutes and with the teams level the turning point of the game came when Eoin Condon fired home St Catherines second goal of the match.

Lisgoold with four players on yellow cards and it was only a matter of time before one of them went and referee Niall Barrett issued a second yellow card to Brendan Flynn with just fourteen minutes remaining.

Even though Catherines had the extra man they stuttered across the line with the victory, when they could have wrapped things up earlier, but all credit to Lisgoold who battled to the very last second and Lisgoold will now play Aghada this coming weekend in the first round proper.
