Castlemartyr 3-7

Erins Own 0-16

Castlemartyr played their first league game of the year away to Erins Own on Sunday with the points shared at the final whistle. Castlemartyr will be happy enough to have got something from the game considering the amount of hurling they have at this stage of the year.

The first half was a story of goals for Castlemartyr and points for Erins Own as Castlemartyr held a three point lead at half time. We found the net three times, two from the impressive Mark Bowens at full forward and a fortuitous goal from Brian Lawton after the flight of the ball deceived the erins Own goal keeper.

The half time score was 3-3 to 0-9 in favour of the reds. Erins Own started the second half brighter and quickly drew level with 3 unanswered points. Castlemartyr eventually raised a white flag through Seanie Hennessey with other points from Eddie Clifford and Jimmy Smiddy.

Castlemartyr made sure Erins Own stayed in the game however through the concession of free's which were being converted by Erins Own. At the death Castlemartyr had a chance to win the game through a long range free from Jimmy Smiddy but this just went the wrong side of the post to keep the score level at the final whistle.

Football Championship

Our footballers make their championship bow for 2011 against Russell Rovers next Sat 2nd in Copper Alley Youghal at 4pm. After a good run in last year’s championship, Joe Stack and his team will be hoping to take confidence from this and get off to a good start on Saturday.
