Glenville GAA News

The Minor team continued their busy schedule of late with another league game away to St Finbarrs on Tuesday night. This was a highly quality game with some splendid football being played by both sides.

The Barrs had the upper hand early on and looked very dangerous up front. Finding ourselves 1-3 to 0-2 behind we began to play some great football and kicked a series of good points from all angles and distances,

Brendan Maloney the main talisman up front with six point. Shane o Riordan finishing off a good move to gave us the lead and we led 1-8 to 1-3 at the break. Facing the wind in the second half we needed a good start and a brace of points from Ben Halbert and a super effort from Kevin o Neill gave a lead of 1-10 to 1-4 but the Barrs thundered into the game and held siege on our goals scoring 2-3 without reply.

Heading towards the end we managed to regain the lead with a late Shane o Regan goal who finished well after a 30 yard run but two goals in injury time gave the barrs the lead again with not enough time to respond we left the game empty handed.

Final score St Finbarrs 5-8 Glenville 2-13.

Team A Foley, D o Sullivan, J McCarthy, E Lynch, M Kennedy, K o Neill ( 0-2) S o Riordan (1-0), B Fenton S o Regan (1-1), Do Farrell (0-1), D o Callaghan (0-1), N Griffin, B Halbert (0-2) B Maloney (0-7) A Ricken. Subs G Carmody, C Fenton.

Back to winning ways against for Minor team Sunday morning we played Fr o Neills in a very tough encounter in the third round of the league. Having lost the last game by two late goals we were in determined mood to get back to winning ways.

All didn’t look so rosy at half time as after playing with a gale force wind we found ourselves 0-4 to 0-1 down in a terrible opening half performance. O Neills found the range straight from the start of the second half and looked to be destined for an easy win.

Unfortunately for them that was to be their final score as Glenville were a different team in the second half turning to face a gale. Eventhough scores were as rare as hens teeth once Aidan Foley goaled from a penalty Glenville never looked like losing the game as Colm Fenton in the Glenville goal was signed to passenger at this stage with the rarity of the o Neills attacks.

Brendan Maloney kicked a free with ten minutes to go which was the final score of the game. A good battling win in the end but a lot of improvement needed. Still in all good progress so far from this team. Best on the day were Colm and Brian Fenton who anchored the back well. Ian o Leary, Eoin Lynch, and Mike Kennedy.

Glenville 1-3 Fr o Neills 0-5
