Cobh 1-6 (9)

At Cobh

Saint Patrick’s Day will be very enjoyable for our boys as they succeeded in defeating the challenge of Cobh in the 1st round of the Junior A Football Championship. Playing with great determination and desire, Lisgoold played some nice football and were a mass improvement from the league games; however there should be an emphasis for shooting practice as a lot of wides were tallied.

Lisgoold started off with a bang as Moss Connell got the first score after a few minutes, another few points from Paul, John and Brian Clifford and Lisgoold looked like running away with it. The experience and guile of Cobh began to show, as they came roaring back into contention, with a point and then a goal. This came from a mix up in the Lisgoold defence, and was palmed in by the corner-forward. This was a blow for Lisgoold, but thankfully their heads did not drop and with great defending from Mike Shea and Charlie McCarthy, was keeping Cobh at bay. The industrious John Cronin set up another few scores, as Paul and Wayne put another bit of daylight between the teams. The half-time whistle blew and we went in to the dressing room 0-6 to 1-1 ahead.

The second half was a dogged affair, as Cobh suddenly woke up and began to try to get on top. Points were traded and some good football developed, as some fantastic fielding from Eoin and Alan ensured Cobh would never get ahead. With 10 minutes to go the pressure was firmly on Lisgoold as the teams were level at 1-5 to 0-8, the key moment came when Brian O’Leary (Man of the Match) soloed up from centre back, past two Cobh men, took a return pass off Brian Clifford and scored from 35 yards out. This was a very inspirational point and pushed Lisgoold on; further points from Paul and John Cronin and Lisgoold were on the way to the third round.

It was a good enough game but a lot of wides were recorded. For Lisgoold to advance any further they would have to be more accurate in front of goals and also they must improve their concentration for the full hour as the majority of points conceded were mistakes from our backs. At least they can look forward to the 3rd Round draw in two weeks time.

Club Book Appeal

There is a book being created in regards to the history of our club. This book will be well-worth buying and will sure to be a “bestseller” when released. However, to add a bit of colour to book, it is deemed that photographs would be necessary to make it one to savour. So, an appeal is being made that anyone within (or outside) the parish, who has photos (past or present) of Lisgoold GAA, please send them into John Joe Regan ASAP. You can also contact him on 0863327642. This book is due to be published shortly, and it will be a great read for any Lisgoold supporter.
