Glenville GAA

Monday night last saw the Junior Footballers kick into action with visiting Youghal our opponents in the first round of the league. This was played in Fouhy Park on a lovely night for football.

Glenville were well in control all through this game and put some excellent passages of play together. Sam Bracken scored our only goal of the game in the tenth minute and gave us a lead of 1-4 to 0-2.

Further points increased the lead to 1-7 to 0-2 at half time as Youghal found it very difficult to combat a well organised Glenville defensive unit. With Youghal playing with the elements in the second half it was Glenville who started at whirl wind fashion with some sublime point taking in very heavy underfoot conditions substantionally increasing the lead to 1-10 to 0-2.

Willie Connolly then went on to kick a number points from all angles and distances and put in a very good performance. Defence dealt with anything Youghal threw at them but in a flash Youghal got a goal and followed it with a point but Glenville pushed on again and kept the scoreboard ticking with well worked scores. A goal from a penalty for Youghal only proved a mere consolation.

The coup de grace was sealed with Jerry McHugh making a return to action after a lengthy layoff due to injury, showing that class is permanent and hasn’t lost that forward instinct even though he was always played in the backs, with the last score of the game that even Bernard Brogan would be proud of. Showing a clean pair of heals to leave the full back for dead and splitting the posts with the trusty cultured right boot. It capped off a good all round performance.

Final Score Glenville 1-19 Youghal 2-3,

Good performances from Mike O Donoghue, Sam Bracken, Joe Colloty Willie Connolly and Pa Cronin.

Our second outing proved to be a very tough assignment physically against Aghada. This was a very useful game for our side and even though defeated they was a lot of positives to be taken out of the game. In very sunny conditions it was a lovely morning for a game and with both defences coping well with the opposing forward sextet a super goal from Denis Buttimer saw us 1-2 to 0-3 ahead.

Aghada went on to dominate the closing stages of the half and held a slender one point advantage 1-2 to 0-6 at half time.

Glenville made a few substitutions at the start of the second half and were a lot more dominant. In a game like this and with scores at a premium on both sides it was the Aghada men on fifty minutes who hit the net which put them two points up. A major boast in the circumstances and a score that ultimately decided the outcome .Glenville closed the gap to one with time up and had number chances to draw the game but the curtains came down with another Aghada score on the call of time to collect the brace of points on offer.

Final Score Glenville 1-6 Aghada 1-8.

Our next league game is tonight Thursday night March 3rd when we travel to Cloughduv to play Bantry in the league. Throw in here is 7pm Junior Footballers continue to impress.

Another fine performance from the Junior Footballers with a solid win over visiting Dungourney on Monday night in Fouhy Park .Although well on top for most of the game it was only in the final quarter that we pulled away from the Duns and the final score may flatter us a bit I think. Very encouraging seeing such a great turn out again from the squad with again upwards on 25 players togged out for the game, and a few older members making a return to action.

Leading 0-8 to 0-5 at half time Dungourney fought back and got the first two points of the second half to trail 0-8 to 0-7. Unfortunately from them it was to become their last score as Glenville went into over drive and 1-6 without reply, the goal coming from the evergreen JJ Kearney sealed another good win for this team.

Final score Glenville 1-14 Dungourney 0-7

The replayed 2010 Minor Football League Final between Glenville and Kiltha Og was due to take place on Saturday evening last in Castlemartyr. With both sets of players on the field and ready to go, news quickly filtered through that no referee was appointed for the game so the game didn’t go ahead.

This was a very unsatisfactory outcome with players and supporters making a bit sacrifice to attend the game. No date has been set for the replay and is unclear when it will be played with so many upcoming games on the horizon.

Juvenile affairs.

U13 Football was the first team out in league action last weekend with the new county league set up kicked into full swing on Saturday last. Glenville played Kilmurry and were well on top of the mid cork men on the day winning comfortably by 5-12 to 1-3.

In fairness the scoreline doesn’t do justice to the Kilmurry who battled gamely to the end. Glenville had some excellent performances and hopefully the good start to the year will continue for the remainder of the season. Thanks to Brackens bakery for supplying food for the visiting teams over the last few weeks against various Glenville teams. The Strawberry mousse cake with white chocolate gouache went down a treat. Keep em coming !!!!
