Glenville GAA news

Glenville to embark on new floodlighting system.

With ever increasing playing numbers Glenville football club 5 years ago decided to take stock and look in which direction the club needed to go to meet those ever increasing requirements. At the time we had the existing pitch in Glenville and dressing rooms. Over the past four years a lot of work and development has gone on to cater for the present members and more importantly the future. The first stage saw the complete resurfacing of the Glenville pitch and erecting of fencing and netting behind both goals. Also a club gym was developed and has been a valuable asset in our players’ development and is continuing to be improved on a constant basis. Realising the one pitch could not cater for the playing numbers a second pitch was developed in Ardnageehy and has been a fantastic asset over the last 4 years. Recently this new pitch has been further developed with the two dressing rooms showers, equipment room and new netting behind the goals. Floodlighting was installed 2 years ago and has proved invaluable with over 100 kids training every Wednesday night and a night games for juveniles and adult football teams a regular occurrence. Of course Glenville seeking to further enhance the playing facilities decided recently to upgrade this present lighting system even further and have it good enough for night hurling and football games. This again is a major undertaking for the club and will come with a heavy financial cost. Work has begun on this undertaking and should be all systems go for the start of 2011 season which is just around the corner. The club will be embarking on a major fundraising venture to support these costs over the coming months but going forward we feel it will be a worthwhile undertaking for the future of the parish. Of course we realise we are in tough economic times but if anyone can contribute financially in any way we will be most appreciative of it.

With the playing season almost complete and they is still a number of outstanding fixtures to complete. Congratulations to out U11 footballers who had a great win on Saturday morning in the final against Castlelyons played in Glenville. This was a tremendous game of football with Glenville marginally the stronger side overall and deserved their win. Credit to both side who displayed great skill in terrible weather conditions, and to coach Mike Gowen who has made a great job with the side. This concludes the juvenile section for the year and can be well pleased with their efforts winning the U11, U12 and U14 football leagues with the U15 team also winning the Fermoy Invitational tournament.
