CASTLEMARTYR LOSE OUT IN CRACKER

ERINS OWN...............................2-11

CASTLEMARTYR........................0-15

Castlemartyr closed the door on a highly successful 2010 hurling campaign, when they were edged out by the home side Erin’s Own, in the Division 1 JHL Final on Sunday last the 17th of October. Having edged out so many close games, over the last couple of years, the tide has now unfortunately turned, and it was the Glounthaune men who finished the game the stronger with two unanswered points in injury time, to annex the silverware.

In a lively game of hurling played in superb conditions, for the middle of October, Castlemartyr started like a whirlwind. Barry Lawton operating on the “40” had three points in his account by the 7th minute as the Reds raced into a 4 point lead. However Erin’s Own struck back quickly and after 17 minutes play the game Castlemartyr led by 6 points to 5. The game was being played at a hectic pace, which was suiting the Reds style of play, but Erin’s goaled on the 19th minute when a high ball into the square was not dealt with properly. Worse was to follow, when on the 26th minute Erin’s Own goaled again following another defensive mix up. So it was an unhappy Castlemartyr camp that trudged in at half time, which despite having dominated the first half possession wise, found themselves trailing by 2-5 to 0-10.

The second half was a tit for tat affair. But try as the Reds might, they were never to lead again in this game. Although Erin’s Own never went more than 2 points in front, and Castlemartyr equalised on 4 separate occasions, a lead point could not be found. On the 60th minute the sides were deadlocked again and it was obvious that the next score would be the winner. Unfortunately it was the home side that found the wherewithal to dig it out, and they added an insurance point on the 62nd minute to seal the deal.

The silverware was handed out at the end, and the Erin’s Own captain was generous in his praise of Castlemartyr in his acceptance speech, saying that winning back to back East Cork titles couldn’t happen to a nicer club. So that was that. Another year over, and many happy memories made by Barney and his men. Roll on 2011.
