CASTLEMARTYR EDGED OUT IN FOOTBALL SEMI

CASTLEMARTYR...............................1-6

ERINS OWN......................................1-7

Just six days after the heroics by their hurling team, in the East Cork Final, Castle martyr’s footballers
took to the field; against a hotly fancied Erin’s Own team in the Junior A football championship.
It says a lot about the status of football in the division, that both teams had to play so soon after
hurling championship commitments, and there was plenty evidence of “ring rust”, from both teams,
during the hour.

Having rained steadily all day, conditions were very greasy for the match played in Ballinacurra,
although it remained dry overhead throughout. Castlemartyr playing with the aid of a slight breeze
in the first half, were under pressure during the first quarter, and were 1-2 to 0-1 behind after 15
minutes play. The Reds were enjoying plenty of possession, but the Erin’s Own forwards looked very
dangerous any time they broke up field. Castlemartyr started to find their range during the second
quarter when Evan O Keeffe and Barry Lawton pointed, and when Barry rattled a beauty to the net
in the 27th minute, the Reds led by 1-3 to 1-2. However Erin’s Own pointed a free just before the
break to leave the sides level at the break.

The wind picked up considerably for the second period as the Reds faced into it, but started the half
brightly, with 3 quick points on the board by the 38th minute. Erin’s Own started to dominate around
midfield after this though, and were only a point in arrears with 10 minutes to go. The Reds fought
courageously to hang on, but on the 57th minute Erin’s Own equalised through a free. Worse was to
follow, when they got the winner through another free on the 60th minute. The Reds tried hard for
an equaliser, and had two or three clear cut chances to do so, but in the end it was not to be.

They are now left free to concentrate on the upcoming County Junior hurling championship, but it
would have been nice to have another East Cork title to aim for, when all that would have been done
and dusted. Still, there is a useful football team there, and they now know, that they are as good as
anyone else out there.
