Erin's Own Lose Out Narrowly

22 February, 2009

Carrignavar 3-5 Erins Own 2-7

Erins Own visited Carrignavar in the 2nd game of the Junior A Football League and lost out by the narrowest of margins. It took 10 mins before we had the first score of the game, Diarmuid O’ Flynn scoring from play. The crossfield wind made scoring difficult and both sides were guilty of wayward shooting. The sides were level at 2 points each with Ian O’ Mahony scoring Erins Own’s second point.

The quality of football improved greatly in the second half and Michael Mullane was forced into making a great save in the 35th minute. From the kick out play went straight to the other end and Brian McHugh scored a great punched goal. Erins Own now led by 1 -2 to 3 points. With the score tied at 1 -2 to 5 points at 45 minutes Carrignavar got the vital goals in the final quarter to secure victory but Erins Own never gave up and with a goal from Stephen Ahern and points from Andrew Power and Ian Quinlan just the bare minimum separated the sides in the end. Erins Own had fine performances from Chris Ryan and Ronan Aherne in defence, Brian McHugh and Mark Collins impressed at midfield, while upfront Stephen Aherne did well when introduced.
