It was with great sadness that the end of a significant era came to pass last week , as our community bade farewell to the late Willie Walsh . For those lucky enough to have encountered the great wit and wisdom of Willie , the impact of his astute knowledge and confident persona will be forever firmly etched on our memories . Willie celebrated his ninetieth birthday earlier this year , amongst a throng of friends and family , and it was with much sadness that it was remarked over and again this week that the party was a wonderful celebration of a full and complete life . That party celebrated a significant milestone , and his happiness at being surrounded by family and friends on the day , including his beautiful grandchildren , was never more evident , as the happy beaming glint in his eye would testify. Willie showed true battling qualities throughout his long and celebrated life , and the strong fight he showed in battling his ultimate illness was nothing less that would have been expected of such a game battler . Willie's legacy is evident across so many strands of our community , and his touch has reached out to so many of us lucky enough to have benefited from his personality , that his memory will linger on in warm thoughts for a long long time . Every player who ever stands at or on our playing fields at Pairc Lios gCul will today benefit from the physical and manual efforts of Willie , whose involvement on the building of the "Blue Lookout" created the ability to raise the funds to purchase and develop the field through the Progressive 45 Drive that was undertaken there on a weekly basis. Ar Dheis lamh De go raibh a h'ainm. Sympathise are extended to Willie's wife Eily ( nee Ahern ) , as well as sons Liam and John , his daughter Margaret and to all of the extended family whose loss is shared by all at CLCG Lios gCul.
