Bride Rovers GAA Notes

Junior Hurling Championship

Our Junior 'A' Hurling team is down to play the quarter final of the East Cork Championship on next Wednesday August 4th. Our opponents will be known on this Thursday night (July 29th) when St Itas play Fr O'Neills. The Gortroe side will be the most likely opponents as this will be their 'first' team against Fr O'Neill's second string. The venue and time for our game will be announced before the weekend. We had a practice game arranged for last Monday night but this had to be cancelled due to a bereavement in our opponents' parish.

'New' Jamesey Kelleher Trophy

On Tuesday last a pleasant function took place in the Garryvoe Hotel when the 'new' Jamesey Kelleher Trophy was launched.Jamesey Kelleher was a legendary Dungourney and Cork hurler, captaining his club selection to All Ireland glory in 1902. Kelleher kept playing hurling with his club until he was nearly 40 years of age. He died in 1943. Three years later the East Cork Board under the chairmanship of the 'Master' Tom Barry N.T., asked his Mrs. Bridget Kelleher for permission to use her late husband's name on a cup for the East Cork Junior 'A' hurling championship. The permission was given and on Friday November 21st Tom Barry and Board Treasurer, Bertie Murphy bought the Jamesey Kelleher Memorial Cup in Cork city. The Bride Rovers Club have been privileged to win the Trophy 3 time in 1968, 1969 and 1998. Seanie Barry was our captain in 1968 and 1969 and Donal in 1998.

Senior Hurling League

We have two fixtures in the RED FM Cork Senior Hurling League. On tonight Thursday July 29th we are at home to Midleton at 7.30pm. On next Monday August 2nd we have another home game against Killeagh again at 7.30pm.

Junior Hurling League Division 3

On Sunday night last July 25th we played Lisgoold in Pairc na Bríde in a Junior Hurling League Division 3 game. We were well on top in all sections of the field from the very start in this game and ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-2.

Team & Scorers: A Broderick, B Collins, J Delaney, F Collins, R O'Connor (0-4, 0-3f). M O'Connell, D Barry, J O'Dowd, S Pratt (0-3), N Hogan, P O'Driscoll (0-2), D Buckley, V O'Keeffe (0-1), J Hogan (2-1), P Butler.

Subs: B Lahive, W O'Leary, S Walsh (0-1)

Minor Hurling

Our East Cork Minor 'B' Hurling Championship semi final against Carrignavar will be fixed shortly and will most likely be played in the week commencing August 9th. We played Cobh in Cobh in the Minor Hurling League last Thursday night but on the night the home side were far too strong winning by 1-20 to 1-8. Having had a good win over Carrignavar in the first round of the League, this was a very disappointing result.

Cork Win

The Cork hurlers defeated Antrim on Sunday in Croke Park. It was a tough dour battle but Cork had too much hurling for the Ulster side. Cork now face into a glamour semi final clash with Kilkenny on Sunday week August 8th. The Cats are seeking 5-in-a-row, never achieved before, but Kilkenny have to beat Cork to even have a chance of retaining their title. Club members seeking tickets for the Cork v Kilkenny game should contact the Club Runaí not later than this Friday night.
