Glenbower Rovers 3-10 Russell Rovers 1-9

Our junior footballers travelled to Killeagh last Sunday afternoon to play the home side in our opening game of the JFL, Division2 programme. While we managed to share the spoils in the corresponding game last year, defeat was to be our lot on this occasion though the score-line does not fully reflect our performance.

It was good to see Paudie Higgins and Colin Crowley back wearing the black and amber shirt again after their sojourn abroad last year and indeed it was these two players who combined well to register our first point in the 2nd minute. Luke Cullinane also made a welcome return to the playing field and performed well in the unfamiliar position of goalkeeper, bringing off a great save in the 6th minute. Four pointed frees by Daniel Moynihan and a beauty from the left peg of Ian Smiddy kept us in touch in this half after we conceded two goals of the soft variety, to leave the half-time score at 2-4 to 0-6.

A few switches at the break saw Eoin Ivers go into goal, having been substituted earlier on, with Luke Cullinane transferring to full-forward and Anthony Walsh introduced at wing forward. It was the home side who were first to score after the restart but then we struck a purple patch in which we had the deficit reduced to a single point by the 12th minute. First, Dan Moynihan kicked over two good points before Kieran Ivers set up Kevin Tattan who tested the Glenbower keeper with a rasping shot and Luke Cullinane was on hand to kick the rebound to the net. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalise on this and the men in green responded quickly with a string of points and a late goal to run out deserving winners, with Ian Smiddy notching our last point from an acute angle.

The Glenbower side were that bit physically stronger and fitter with only Colin Crowley, Anthony Archer and Paudie Higgins matching them. Eoin Ivers did well when he resumed his old position in goal and Barry Fitzgerald, Tadgh Crowley, Joe Walsh, Kieran Ivers and Seamus Kearney also tried hard over the hour.

Team: Luke Cullinane, Brian Crowley, Eoin Ivers, Tadgh Crowley, Joe Walsh, Anthony Archer, Barry Fitzgerald; Colin Crowley, Seamus Kearney, Ian Smiddy, John Paul Ivers, John Ahern; Kevin Tattan, Paudie Higgins, Daniel Moynihan.

Subs: Anthony Walsh, James Furlong, James Ahern (all used), James Walsh, Seamus Cronin, John Burke.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Seamus Cronin to the club
