Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Hurling League – Group 1 Final

Na Piarsaigh 3-18 Bishopstown 1-07

Playing some stylish hurling Na Piarsaigh proved too strong for Bishopstown in this Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Group 1 Hurling League Final which was played in Bishopstown on Monday evening last.

Na Piarsaigh got off to the best possible start with a goal by the lively Shane Duggan and with a brace of pointed frees by the same player they were 1-02 to the good by the 6th minute. David O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Bishopstown with a well taken point four minutes later but their opponents struck for their second goal when a pin point pass from Duggan found the inrushing Paul Cumming and he made no mistake in finding the net. Brian O’Driscoll pulled back a point for the home side but again Na Piarsaigh’s response was swift when Duggan broke through for his second goal. Na Piarsaigh continued to pile on the pressure with Liam Connery, Eoin Connolly and Shane Curtin marshalling a tight marking defence, Danny Morrissey driving on from midfield while up front English, Alan Hogan, Cumming and Duggan, were proving a major stumbling block. Three points from Duggan and one from English saw them lead 3-06 to 0-02 after twenty minutes before O’Driscoll reduced the deficit with a pointed free for the home side. Two points from English and one from Connery extended Na Piarsaigh’s advantage to see them lead 3-09 to 0-05 at the break with O’Driscoll adding the extra points from Bishopstown.

Na Piarsaigh maintained their authority on the resumption and added to their tally with well executed points from Ryan Lynch, Ryan Doyle, Alan Hogan and Eoin Hanafin. In fairness to Bishopstown they tried their utmost to get back into the game with Stephen Lynch in goal, Conor Dorman, Christopher Bannon, Brian O’Driscoll and Fintan O’Sullivan catching the eye but at this stage there was a mountain to climb and although O’Driscoll made it 0-07 to 3-14 with ten minutes remaining Na Piarsaigh increased their advantage with points from sub Gordon Joyce, Ryan Doyle, Johnny English and Eoin Connolly. Bishopstown were rewarded for their efforts with a goal from a penalty taken by O’Driscoll at the death leaving Na Piarsaigh to run out comfortable winners on the final scoreline of 3-18 to 1-07

Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Hurling League - Group 2 – Final

Ballinhassig 1-18 Valley Rvs 1-10

A strong second half performance saw Ballinhassig take Group 2 honours in this entertaining Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Hurling League Final which was played in Innishannon.

Ballinhassig got off to the better start with points from Conor McHugh and Donncha O’Donovan before Valley Rvs opened their account with a pointed free from John Cottrell. Three points in a row from Robert Murphy, Michael Collins and Eoin Cullinane saw Ballinhassig increase their advantage but Valley Rvs were equal to the task and led by the exploits of John Cottrell, Cathal Crowley, Gearoid Ryan, Eoin Delaney, Derek Canty and Darragh Crowley they increased their efforts. After an exchange of points between Canty and Donncha O’Donovan they reduced the margin with pointed frees from Crowley and Canty to leave two between the sides by the 19th minute 0-04 to 0-06. A point from Gavin Taccaberry gave Ballinhassig some breathing space but the home side upped the tempo and with a brace of points from placed balls by Cottrell and one from play by Delaney the sides were on level term by the 24th minute at 0-07 apiece. As half time approached the visitors again kicked and regained the lead with points from O’Donovan and Collins and after Canty and O’Donovan exchanged pointed frees they went in at the break leading 0-10 to 0-08.

On the resumption Darragh Crowley put one between the sides with a neat point but that was as good as it got for the home side as Ballinhassig found another gear. Spurred on by the impressive displays of Ben Cottrell, Pat O’Leary, Sean Coleman, Ryan O’Leary, Robert Reynolds, Donncha O’Donovan and Michael Collins they took the game to their opponents with purpose. Reeling off six points on the trot, two apiece from O’Donovan and Collins and one each from Robert Murphy and sub James O’Callaghan they put some daylight between the sides to lead 0-16 to 0-09 by the 52nd minute. Better was to follow when O’Donovan broke through for a goal and with a pointed ’65 from the same player they virtually killed this game as a contest. To their credit Valley Rvs never gave up the chase as they hit back with a goal from Delaney followed by a pointed free from John Cottrell but unfortunately for them the damage had already been done as fittingly O’Donovan finished the scoring with a great point to see his side take the laurels on the final scoreline of 1-18 to 1-10.

Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Hurling League – Group 3 Final

St Finbarrs 3-11 Douglas 2-12

A late scoring surge which yielded a goal and a point from sub Shane Edwards-Murphy and a point from Damien Cahalane saw St Finbarrs edge past Douglas in this cracking Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Group 3 (12 a-side) League Final which was played in Douglas.

Douglas got off to the better start when after five minutes Paul Fitzgerald broke through for a goal but St Finbarrs gradually found their feet and with a brace of well taken points from Cian O’Brien they narrowed the gap and with a further point from Damien Cahalane they drew level by the 16th minute.. Picking up the pace of the game the home side with Sean Collins, Martin Barry, Paul Fitzgerald and Alan Cadogan showing the way took the game to their opponents and with four points in succession from Caolan Mulrooney, Cadogan, Fitzgerald and Barry they extended their advantage to lead 1-05 to 0-03 with twenty one minutes gone on the clock. After an exchange of points between Gavin O’Keeffe and Fitzgerald a point from Eoghan Kenefick saw the ‘Barrs reduce the deficit to go in at the break trailing 0-05 to 1-06.

As in the first half Douglas got off to the perfect start on the resumption with Fitzgerald’s second goal but this time the ‘Barrs reaction was immediate when they responded with a goal of their own from Cahalane. A point from Brian Cuthbert kept Douglas in the ascendancy leading 2-07 to 1-05 by the 35th minute. The visitors then upped the tempo of the game with Eoghan Kenefick, Gavin O’Keeffe, Damien Cahalane and sub Shane Edwards-Murphy rising to the challenge. A powerful goal from Edwards-Murphy started their comeback and with three points from Kenefick, all from placed balls, they took the lead for the first time 2-08 to 2-07. Realising the danger Douglas again increased their efforts and with points from Barry (free), Cadogan and Barry again, this time from a ’65, they regained the lead as the game was entering its final phase. A pointed ’65 from Kenefick left the bare minimum between the sides but the home side with well executed points from Cadogan and Barry increased the margin to three as the clock was ticking down and it now looked as if they had finally killed off their opponents challenge. However the ‘Barrs maintained their composure and with Edwards-Murphy finding the net the sides were again on level terms as the game now reached a nail-biting finale and with points from Cahalane and Edwards-Murphy they took the honours on the final scoreline of 3-11 to 2-10.

Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor League – Group 4 – Final

Kilmeen/Kilbree 1-12 Cobh 0-14

A goal just before the break from Shane O’Donovan proved decisive in Kilmeen/Kilbree’s victory over Cobh in this Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Group 4 (12 a-side) Hurling League Final which was played in Ballincollig on Tuesday evening last.

In what was a most entertaining and close game throughout between two evenly matched sides Kilmeen/Kilbree opened the scoring with a fine point from Sean Murray in the 3rd minute. Cobh got off the mark with a point from John Flanagan only to see the “Carbery” side maintain their advantage with a point from Brian Daly. Flanagan again equalised for Cobh after his initial shot at goal was superbly saved by ‘keeper Denis Delea. Cobh with strong displays from Conor McLoughlin, Aidan O’Rourke, Darragh O’Keeffe, Cian Spriggs and John Flanagan gradually began to find their scoring range and after Daly regained the lead for Kilmeen/Kilbree they hit back with two pointed frees from Spriggs and one from play by Adam McCarthy to take the lead for the first time by the 16th minute 0-05 to 0-03. As Daly and Spriggs exchanged points on a number of occasions Kilmeen/Kilbree with Delea, Damien O’Donovan, Sean O’Donovan, Jack Coffey and Brian Daly rallying to the cause increased their efforts and with points from Mark O’Sullivan and Daly it was again all square as half time approached. Adam McCarthy and Shane O’Donovan exchanged points before O’Keeffe put Cobh back into the lead with a well executed point but straight from the puck-out Daly gained possession and with a pin point pass he found Shane O’Donovan in space and he made no mistake in finding the net to see his side go in at the break leading 1-08 to 0-09.

Cobh fought back on the resumption to equalise with a brace of pointed frees from Spriggs. As both sides now fought for supremacy it was Kilmeen/Kilbree who took the initiative with two points apiece from Daly and Coffey to leave the scoreline read 1-12 to 0-11 by the 51st minute. On seeing the game slipping away from them Cobh upped their game and with a pointed free from Spriggs they cut the margin. Gaining in confidence they drove forward with purpose and with a point from sub Sam Stapleton the margin was down to two. In a nail-biting finale the Kilmeen/Kilbree defence was under extreme pressure as the fought tooth and nail to preserve their lead and limited their opponents to a point from O’Keeffe to see them hold out for victory by the narrowest of margins 1-12 to 0-14.
