Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Football Leagues

As the Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Football Leagues draw towards their conclusion Valley qualified for the final of Group 1 after they had three points to spare over Douglas in their most entertaining semi-final game which was played in Innishannon. Douglas shaded the proceedings in the first half after which they led 2-03 to 1-03 at the break, with Gary Farrell grabbing the goal for the home side, and it could have easily been larger but for some wasted opportunities. However in the second half Valley Rvs led by the promptings of Dave McCarthy, Tim Cummins, Cathal Crowley, Darragh Crowley, John Cottrell, Eoin Delaney, Mark Murphy and Oisin O’Callaghan increased their efforts. Aided by a goal from Delaney and some well worked points from Delaney, Farrell, Murphy and Aidan Walsh they took the lead and although Douglas put in a strong challenge to regain the initiative the Valley Rvs defence stood firm and held out for a 2-09 to 2-06 victory.

Glanmire will join Valley Rvs in the final after they had a 0-11 to 0-08 home victory over Ballincollig. The winners who led at the break 0-06 to 0-04 had impressive displays from Shane Conlon in goal, who as well as saving a penalty shot early in the second half was also called on to make a few timely interventions, Shane Lotty, David Murphy, Chris Ryan, David O’Brien and Neal Crotty with their points coming from O’Brien, Lotty, Crotty and John McElhinney

In Group 2 (12 a-side) Delanys joined Cill na Martra, Ilen Rvs and Erins Own in the semi-finals after they had a solid 6-12 to 3-08 home victory over Erins Own who were already qualified regardless of the result. They home side with strong performances from Eric Lynch in goal, James Mulcahy, Gavin Mulryan, Colin Peelo and Sean Healy took the game to their opponents from the throw-in and with a brace of goals each from Ian McConville and Gary Gould and points from Shane Healy and Danny O’Connor they led at the break 4-08 to 1-03 with Cian O’Callaghan providing the goal for Erins Own while Ian Mylod, Cian O’Connor and Cormac Dooley supplied the points. Although the visitors upped their game on the resumption as Cormac Dooley, Kevin Moynihan, Cian O’Callaghan and Ian Mylod came more into the fray with goals from O’Callaghan and Andrew Gannon the home side held their nerve and with further goals from Ronan Jestin and Gary Buckley and some fine points from John Hosford they cemented their victory.

In the semi-finals Cill na Martra are at home to Delanys while Erins Own and Ilen Rvs meet in Kilmurry in what promises to be two exciting contests.

In the remaining game of the league series in this group Kinsale had a well merited 3-18 to 0-08 home success over Macroom. The home side who were well served by Anthony Broderick, Rory O’Connor, Joey Beecher and Cian Hackett took the initiative from the outset and with two goals from Mark Eaton, who ended up with a personal tally of 2-06, and some fine points from Alan Goold, Fergal Reilly and Niall McCarthy they went in at the interval leading 2-09 to 0-03. In the second half the home side continued to take the game to their opponents and with a goal from Alan Gould and points from Eaton, Gould, Reilly and McCarthy they secured a comfortable victory despite the best attempts of Macroom to redress the margin.

Bishopstown qualified to meet Na Piarsaigh in the Rochestown Park Hotel Non-Exam Co Minor Group 1 Hurling League Final after a late goal from Seamus Glynn gave them a 4-07 to 1-15 away victory over Blackrock. In what was a most entertaining contest in which both sides served up some fine passages of hurling it was the ability of the visitors to snatch goals at vital stages that swung the issue in their favour to record a deserved victory at the death. The winners had strong displays from Christopher Banon, Conor O’Donovan, Matthew Kelleher and Brian Luttrell while as well as Glynn, Brian O’Driscoll also helped himself to a brace of goals with David O’Brien showing his accuracy from placed balls.

Ballinhassig with strong performances from Ryan O’Leary, Rob Reynolds, Pat O’Leary and Ben Cottrell saw off the challenge of Valley Rvs to take Group 2 honours in this game which was played in Innishannon on Sunday morning. Leading at the break 0-10 to 0-08 after some well-executed points from Conor McHugh, Donncha O’Donovan, Robert Murphy and Michael Collins the winners continued to take the game to their opponents on the resumption and with a goal from O’Donovan and further points from Jamie O’Callaghan and Collins they ran out worthy winners despite a spirited comeback from Valley Rvs.

In another game played in this group Bandon completed their programme with a solid 2-18 to 0-12 home victory over Courcey Rvs. Taking the initiative from the throw-in, Bandon with James McSweeney in goal, Mark Sugrue, Shane Hickey, Aidan Dullea, Padraig O’Leary, Jamie Crowley and Michael Cahalane to the fore led at the break 1-09 to 0-03 thanks to a goal from Denis Coffey and some fine points from Sugrue, Crowley, Cahalane and Daithi O’Donovan. Although Courcey Rvs increased their efforts on the resumption the home side continued to hold the upper hand and with their second goal coming from Aidan Dullea and some neat points from Sugrue, Crowley, Cahalane and Matthew McNamara they sealed their victory.

In Group 3 (12 a-side) a late goal from Shane Edwards-Murphy followed by points from Damien Cahalane and Edwards-Murphy saw St Finbarrs edge out Douglas 3-11 to 2-12 to take the honours in this group final which was played in Douglas on Sunday evening last in what turned out to be a most entertaining contest

In another game played in this group two goals from Matthew Cooney aided Mayfield to a 5-12 to 0-11 home victory over Inniscarra. The winners were best served by Cooney, Darran Crowley, Shane Seward and Shane O’Donovan while as well as Cooney, Crowley, Eolan Bond and Kevin Punch also found the net.

In was a good week for Cobh in Group 4 (12 a-side) when after victories over Clondrohid and Clonakilty they qualified to meet Kilmeen/Kilbree in the final of this group. On Tuesday evening they had a 2-25 to 2-06 home success over Clondrohid. Led by the displays of Ronan Damery, Mark Rohan, Sam Stapleton and Tony O’Donovan they led at the break 0-12 to 1-03 after some excellent points from Alan Spriggs, Adam McCarthy, Jason Keating and Darragh O’Keeffe. In the second half they maintained their authority and with a brace of goals from Paul Buckley and further points from Spriggs, McCarthy, Keating O’Keeffe, Eoin Hastings and Mark Rohan they ran out comfortable winners.

On Saturday evening they travelled to Clonakilty to take on the home side and again they took the points on offer 8-20 to 4-06. Their goals came from Paul Buckley, Adam McCarthy and Cian Spriggs, two each, while John Flanagan and Sam Stapleton also got in the goal-scoring act with Kevin McSweeney, Luke Cullen, Mark Rohan and Graham O’Connor offering valuable assistance.

Setantas completed their league series with a 1-13 to 2-09 home victory over Ballincollig. Ballincollig with Stephen Crowley, Eoin O’Donovan, Matthew O’Sullivan and Brian O’Sullivan catching the eye had the better of the play in the opening half and with a goal from Eoin Wool and points from Emmett Ryle, Colin Moore, Padraig Harrington and Brian O’Connor they led at the break 1-08 to 0-07. However in the second half Setantas upped a gear thanks to solid displays from Alan O’Shea in goal, Pat Fitton, Shane Bourke and Robert Daly. Point by point they reduced the deficit but a goal from Ryle kept Ballincollig to the forefront and it looked like they would take the points as the final whistle approached but in one last assault a goal from Fitton gave Setantas victory by the narrowest of margins.
