Under 10's Report

Youghal Under 10's had a busy period over the last fortnight. It started with a blitz at home. Youghal hosted St.Catherines, Russell Rovers and Lisgoold. An enjoyable evening of sport was had by all teams with Youghal coming out on top with three victories.

Next up was an away trip to Erins Own for the lads second only football match of the season. The lads started slowly and it took them time to get used to the “big ball”, but they soon found their feet. Leading by 0:11 to 1:5 at half time, the lads went for broke and finished with a impressive tally of 2:15 to 1:5. Great credit to the lads and with 7 different players scoring the 15 points, it bodes well for the future of this team.

Intermediate Hurling Championship v Watergrasshill

Venue: Killeagh Date: Saturday - 5th June 2010

Result: Youghal 3-11 Watergrasshill 0-06

Youghal intermediate hurlers opened their 2010 championship campaign with a great win over fellow East Cork side Watergrasshill at Killeagh on Saturday evening last. This was expected to be a very closely-fought affair, judging by previous encounters between the teams. And so it proved for most of the game, though Youghal's late scores somewhat distorts the story of the game.

After a beautiful day, the rain clouds descended on Killeagh just before the throw-in and both players & spectators were drenched by heavy showers during the game. The resultant greasy surface made ball control very difficult & both teams made early ball-handling errors. Such an error led to an early opening for Brendan Ring, which he fully availed of by blasting to the net. Watergrasshill responded with a couple of points of their own, before Nigel Roche (2), Bill Cooper & Damien Ring added excellent points during a low-scoring first half. Watergrasshill again tagged on some points, before Barry Ring hit a monster point from 80m towards the end of the half, which concluded at Youghal 1-05 Watergrasshill 0-05.

The Youghal mentors would not have been over-impressed by the first half performance, but their words of encouragement at half-time certainly seemed to work the oracle as the team proceeded to up their game hugely for the second half. The early second half exchanges were ferociously contested. Though Watergrasshill got an early point, it proved to be their only score of the half. The Youghal lads proceeded to chase every ball & hassle their opponents in packs. The intensity & pace of their game eventually wore Watergrasshill down. James O'Mahony set up a great goal for Bill Cooper, now operating at full forward. This was followed by a succession of points from Brendan Ring (2), Damien Ring (2), & Brendan Coleman before James O'Mahony again turned provider for Bill Cooper to blast to the net as we entered injury time. There was still time for Conor Spillane to land a great long-range point to wrap up a great second half performance by the team.

Youghal Team: Eoin Coleman, Ml Cronin, John Grace, Brendan O'Sullivan, Conor Spillane.

Well done lads!!!
