O'Neills lose 1st game

08 February, 2009

Fr. O’ Neill’s 0-4 Cloyne 0-9

East Cork Junior ‘A’ Football League .

Cloyne gained their first points of the 2009 league at O’ Neill’s expense when they had 5 points to spare at a sun drenched but bitterly cold Ahavine on Sunday last.

Cloyne played with the strong westerly wind in the opening half and had the edge in most sectors of the field in this period of the game which resulted in their 0-6 to 0-1 lead at the short whistle, O’ Neill’s point coming from Eoghan McCarthy’s boot.

O’ Neill’s had hoped for better things in the second half as they now had the benefit of the strong wind. However, it was Cloyne who defended in numbers and O’ Neill’s found it extremely difficult to penetrate their defence.

Podge succeeded on the 36th minute but Diarmuid O’ Sullivan cancelled it out almost immediately. Luke Swayne added a third point for the home side, followed by an Eoin Conway point but Cloyne finished the stronger when they added two more pointed frees.
