Cork County Minor Board Preview
29 April, 2010
The first rounds of the Co Premier Minor Championships conclude this week with the final five games down for decision.
Tonight in Mayfield, Carrigtwohill and Ballincollig meet in the Co Premier 1 Minor Football Championship in what should be an interesting encounter. Although Carrigtwohill were winners at U16 level two years ago this season they have been a little disappointing in their league games to date but with their hurlers now safely through to the third round after their victory over Mallow you can be sure that the footballers will be all out to do likewise. On the other hand Ballincollig have been working away quietly and with a number of quality players on their side they will be striving to get their campaign off to a winning start.
Also tonight Clonakilty and Midleton meet in Ovens in the Co Premier 2 Minor Football Championship. This is a hard game to call and although Midleton are unbeaten in the league to date but in recent weeks they have been concentrating in hurling to good effect and this might have upset their preparations but like their neighbours Carrigtwohill it will give them the spur to advance at the first time of asking. Clonakilty have also been shaping up well this season and probably will be better prepared and this could be the key to their advancement.
Tomorrow evening Clyda Rvs and Clann na nGael meet in the same competition in Brinny in what should produce a close contest between two solid foot-balling sides. Clyda Rvs who have upgraded this season will be all out to do well in this competition and judging by their league result to date it is well within their compass to advance. However their opponents who were in Premier 1 last season will be hoping that the experience they gained in that grade will be of benefit to them in getting past the first hurdle.
The big game down for decision this week is the meeting of “City” rivals Blackrock and Na Piarsaigh in Co Premier 1 Minor Hurling Championship on Monday evening in Pairc Ui Rinn at 7.00 pm. Both these sides met in the Championship on two occasions last season and if the fare offered then is anywhere near as exciting on this occasion a cracker is in store with only a point or two dividing the sides at the final whistle.
The final game this week is on Thursday evening when Bishopstown and Carbery Rngs battle it out in the Co Premier 1 Minor Football Championship in Bandon. This game has all the credentials of going down to the wire with only a lucky bounce of the ball either way dividing the side at the final whistle.
The next meeting of the Cork Co Minor Board will be held in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Thursday night next (6th May) at 8.30 pm. where details of this year’s Non-Exam Leagues will be finalised.
