Junior A Football Championship

A brave and battling performance from The Village just wasn’t enough to defeat Carrignavar last Sunday in Lisgoold. Ultimately the concession of four late points broke the hearts of a spirited Ballinacurra comeback.

Ballinacurra started well and some early attacks eventually yield a pointed free from Kevin O’Brien after 3 minutes. The first goal of the game came after 5 minutes when the Carrignavar full forwarded caught the ball close, spun and crashed the ball to the net pas the helpless Alan Creedon. Good work by Kevin O’Brien down the left hand side who found the on-rushing Vincent O Sullivan with a pin-point accurate cross-field ball and Vincent duly split the posts to leave a point between the sides. Disaster struck again in the 12th minute when Carrignavar goaled for the second time in the game and 4 minutes later had their first point of the game to leave 5 points between the sides.

A nicely taken point from Stephen O’Brien from an acute angle in the 21st minute kept The Village in the hunt but Carrignavar replied with one of their own in the 25th minute. A great move through the middle in the 27th minute resulted in a point for Killian Harty but yet again Carrignavar came back and pointed in the 29thand 30th minutes. In first half injury time after a great run in behind the defence, Stephen O’Brien collected a pass and slipped the ball past the advancing Carrignavar goalkeeper to leave the half time score at Ballinacurra 1-4 Carrignavar 2-4.

The second half began in style when Scott Richards collected from the throw in and went on a mazy run and chipped over a fine point to leave two between the sides. The next 3 minutes ultimately decided the outcome of the game when Carrignavar scored 1-2 without reply to leave Ballincurra with an uphill task. Pointed frees by both Kevin O’Brien and James Nagle in the 36th and 39th minutes kept Ballinacurra in touch. A Carrignavar point in the 47th again left 6 points between the sides.

As shown all year by this Ballinacurra team they yet again showed their battling qualities. A neat move in the 49th minute involving James Nagle resulted in a point by Vincent O’Sullivan. Great work by Dave McCarthy and Scott Richards at the back in the 51st minute ended with a James Nagle point. In the 54th minute Vince O Sullivan collected the ball in the middle and found James Nagle bursting through from midfield. Soloing through the middle he drew the full back and hand-passed to Killian Harty who finished to the net with aplomb to leave only a point between the sides. Despite their best efforts Ballinacurra couldn’t find the equalising score. Carrignavar came storming back and four late points broke Ballinacurra hearts to leave the final score at Ballinacurra 2-9 Carrignavar 3-11.

Best on the day for Ballinacurra were Scott Richards, Vincent O’Sullivan, Kevin O’Brien, Stephen Murphy and substitute Dave McCarthy. The concession of two early goals left the Village with an uphill task and yet again they nearly pulled it off. Again management must be complimented on the fitness levels of the team and with a bit of luck we could have been looking forward to the next round.
