CASTLEMARTYR WIN LOCAL DERBY

CASTLEMARTYR........................2-18

DUNGOURNEY..........................0-14

The scoreboard may say that this was a convincing win for Castlemartyr in Division 1 of the JHL, but in truth this was a highly competitive affair between two evenly matched teams, played in Castlemartyr on Sunday evening last the 11th of April .Both teams had their periods of dominance during the match, but the difference being that on the night, the home side forwards couldn’t miss if they tried, whereas the Dungourney men were guilty of some wayward shooting

Castlemartyr playing their second game of the campaign, compared to Dungourney’s first were quick out of the blocks and were 1-5 to 0-2 ahead after the first quarter. Barry Lawton was showing good form in the corner, with 3 smart points, and Mark Bowens weighed in with a well taken goal. Dungourney took over for a period then and were rewarded with 3 unanswered points, which could have been more if they capitalised on their chances. But the Reds settled again before the break and Seanie Hennessy thundered into the game, rifling over 3 long range points to leave it 1-9 to 0-6 at half time.

Another Mark Bowens goal immediately after the restart put some serious daylight between the teams. From here to the end of the game it was tit for tat with Dungourney unable to eat into the Castlemartyr lead, due primarily to the fact that the Reds rearguard were in no mood to concede goals. The Castlemartyr full back line although under some serious pressure, somehow repelled every attack on their goal line, and Dave Fleming deservedly ended up with a clean sheet.

Barry Lawton had another fine second half with a further 3 points, and was ably assisted by his brother Brian who was full of running in the middle of the field. In the end when the excellent referee Tim Dineen blew for full time the Reds led by 2-18 to 0-14. If these 2 teams meet later on in the season, there is no doubt that the scoreboard will be a lot closer.
