Castlemartyr GAA Notes

RUSSELL ROVERS..................2-7

Castlemartyr finished their preparations for the upcoming clash with Castlelyons in the championship, with a useful workout against Russell Rovers in Round 5 of the JFL in Shanagarry on Saturday last the 20th of March.

After a fine first half display, the Reds playing against a stiff breeze were 1-6 to 0-3 to the good at the short whistle, and looking good to garner the maximum points. But a total collapse in the second half, when the seasiders upped the ante, saw the Reds in arrears by a couple of points as the game entered its final chapter. To their credit however they dug it out at the death and rallied to draw level, thus insuring a share of the spoils.

The championship season gets underway for the footballers of Castlemartyr and Castlelyons on Sunday next 3.00pm at the well appointed venue of Ahavine.

It seems far too early in the year to be talking about do or die clashes, but such is the status of the big ball game in the East Cork barony ,that it’s a case of on with the overcoats and get out to support your local team.

The two teams previously clashed in the championship last year in a wide open, attacking game of football, with Castlemartyr just edging the fixture due to their ability on the day to take their goal chances That game ended 4-8 to 0-13 and Sunday next promises to be another battle to the final whistle and no doubt whichever side comes out on top; they hardly will have much to spare.

The Reds mentors will be looking for a much improved performance from all concerned compared to their recent league outings in order to triumph next Sunday. They have put a good effort in, over the last two months in training so hopefully they will get their reward on the day.

So please make every effort to support the lads next Sunday, in Ahavine at 3.00

Following the success of last year’s Killarney jaunt, Johnny Walsh and the boys are off on their travels again, but this time setting off from Limerick. Last year’s team of Johnny, Jimmy,Barra, Kevin, Dagger and Adrian are being joined this year by Kieran Lynch, Peter Horgan and Marty O Keeffe.

Good Friday will be the day of the task, so please support the boys with a few bob when you see the sponsorship cards. This year’s proceeds will be going towards getting a new set of jerseys.

Johnny Walsh the head honcho in the whole thing will only be back from his honeymoon with Maired on the previous Wednesday, following the wonderful wedding celebrations a couple of weeks ago, so no doubt he will be running on empty.
