Youghal GAA Notes

03 December, 2021

A Tribute to the late Sean O'Leary - Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Eochaill.

Le Sam Ní Shuain Oifigeach Poiblí Eoghaill.

It is with great sadness that Youghal GAA have learned of the death of one of our most famous and renowned hurlers, Seanie O'Leary.  His passing has sent a wave of shock and loss across the entire GAA community in Cork and around the whole island of Ireland, such was his legacy to the game.

While his exploits for Cork will go down as some of the greatest moments in the game's history, in Youghal we were the lucky ones.  Seanie hurled with us throughout one of Youghal's greatest periods on the field of play in the 70s & 80s and his contribution was immeasurable. He lined out at corner forward in our first and only County Senior Hurling Final in 1971 where a late Glen Rovers rally saw off the gallant Youghal men and the same year he won an All Ireland Under 21 medal with Cork.  A decade later, in 1981 he was a vital part of the Youghal team that won the Cork Senior league v Midleton.

All the while, he picked up four  Celtic crosses in the red of Cork and was awarded Centenary Hurler of the Year in 1984.

A great friend to all he shared the maroon and gold jersey with, his contribution to the game of hurling made us so proud that he was one of our own.

Our sincere condolences to his wife Geraldine, his children Aideen, Tomás and Ciarán and the extended O'Leary family at this sad time.
