Castlelyons Notes

11 November, 2021

Castlelyons GAA Club Notes week ended 8.11.21.

By Kieran McGann, PRO Castlelyons GAA.

Castlelyons GAA considering a ‘One Club’ Structure and Governance.

The GAA, Camogie Association, and Ladies Gaelic Football Association each have their own membership, governance, and traditions. The associations work in a co-operative fashion to promote the playing of Gaelic games. Nationally there is an increased impetus on moving towards greater alignment of the GAA, Camogie and LGFA, mainly due to pressure from Sport Ireland and the Government. In more recent years several Clubs throughout the country are uniting as ‘One Club’. This concept is now introduced by many local Clubs. All the associations appreciate the benefits of a ‘One Club’ approach in promoting Gaelic games at both juvenile and adult level as it caters for all family members both male and female. Castlelyons are a growing family in GAA adult and Juvenile, Camogie Adult and juvenile and Ladies Gaelic Football Juvenile at present and no doubt they will have and adult team shortly. This is sure to be of particular benefit to Castlelyons as we now have a strong Camogie Club and more recently Ladies Gaelic Football Club. While some papers were presented for review in March 2021 the Castlelyons Clubs will formally discuss the matter now as it is important to have a united vision and alignment for new development and the sharing plus maintenance of facilities in the future.

Premier Intermediate hurling semi-final now postponed until Saturday 20th November.

Well, it will be a case of looking forward to the turkey or the goose is cooked by Christmas for our intermediate hurlers. We started out training in early this year and have done well in reaching a league Cup final and now the semi-final of the championship with the game provisionally fixed for the last week and then next week but now it is gone out another two weeks to Saturday 20.11. 21. This is because our opponents Ballinhassig are also involved in the county junior football championship, and football in Cork at junior level is taking precedence over hurling as the county winners in that grade represent Cork in the Munster earlier than the hurling.

This is a further disruption to Castlelyons preparations as it is so difficult for a team in the zone during such uncertainties. Our opponents Ballinhassig were out on Sunday in the County JAFC against Tadgh Mac Cárthaigh and after a massive fight came out on top in extra time and they are out again next Sunday. This may be the big ball stuff but is certainly helping their team focus, fitness, and physicality and will be pushing into strong favourites against our lads who will have no competitive action. I suppose on a positive note for us some injuries lads had after Imokilly outings are clearing up. Also, Colm Spillane is making very steady progress on the road to recovery for us and all going well will play some part the next day.

Castlelyons Club Annual General Meeting 2021 postponed.

All members have been circulated with full details of the Castlelyons GAA Annual General Meeting for the 20th of November 2021. However, since our hurlers are playing Ballinhassig in the PIHC semi-final the same day the AGM will be postponed to a later date. At least there is a return to holding this vital meeting with a physical rather than the incorporeal presence of last year. There are a few vacancies to be filled, especially, secretary, PRO and Lotto Manager, and some new members would be welcome to assist with development. There is a lot of preparatory work done by the Steering Group on laying down the development plan for both lands recently purchased, existing lands and

the clubhouse. A piece of work has been carried out on available funding including capital sports grants, viewing other club layouts, plus preparatory work on planning permission.

The Club most anxious for some new members to volunteer a little of their spare time. Maybe more sub-committees would be an effective way to involve members with necessary skills to assist with finance, Lotto, fundraising, pitch and Astro turf development, clubhouse development and centre liaison and there are more areas where assistance can be volunteered but will not be over taxing. This is an exciting time for young and middle-aged adult members, especially the ladies, to get involved at Executive and other levels of the Club. A three-year term is seen as the best way forward in the GAA to help an executive have a focused delivery of their vision and then make way for others to drive on again. So now is the time for an injection of fresh blood and talent and no doubt they will come forward at our AGM.

The East Cork Board are hosting a Football Review & Planning Meeting, on Wednesday November 17th at 8pm, the venue will be confirmed shortly. The Board are inviting the Chairperson & Secretary of each Football club along with one other member to attend.

Topics on the Clár include a review of 2020, gradings in Junior A, B & C for the coming year, the league programme and championship format plus entering an Imokilly football team in the 2022 championship. Thanks to Maurice Carroll.

Last Monday the 8th of November the holy sacrifice of the Mass was offered for the repose of the souls of all who passed away since the Covid pandemic. This Mass was said by Fr Tim Hazelwood in St. John The Baptist Church, Killeagh. There was a large crowd of delegates, and relatives of recently deceased present. We had a list of those deceased from the Clubs including Castlelyons. A special thanks to Maurice Carroll of our own club who sang the hymns with accompanying music by Mary P Daly, Killeagh.
