Glenville GAA Notes.

Glenville 2-10 (16) Cobh 3-04 (13)

An outstanding win by our U15s saw them beat Cobh in the U15 D1 Shield Final in Aghada on Sunday. This was the third meeting of the sides this year and Cobh, having won the past two, were odds-on favourites to complete the treble. This led to a brilliant game of football played with hunger, intensity, and determination by both sides.
The first break Glenville got was when Captain, Dean Field won the toss and chose to play with the very strong wind in the first half. Despite having the wind, Cobh secured the first score in the game with a goal. Glenville quickly fought back and got 5 points from play without reply (Shayne Curtin 0-3, Shane O’Callaghan 0-1 and Mike O’Riordan 0-1). Shortly before the first water break, Cobh got a second goal but Shane O’Callaghan got his second point to level the game 2-0 to 0-6 at the water break.

The second quarter saw Glenville gain momentum and good teamwork moved the ball up the field resulting in a Glenville goal with a brilliant finish by Darragh Collins. Shayne Curtin, in superb scoring form, scored his fourth point while the backs held Cobh to a single point score in this quarter. Half-time, Glenville led by three points, 1-7 to 2-1.
Glenville now entered the second half playing into a strong wind and a key turning point in the game was a red card issued to one of the Cobh players, giving Glenville an extra man. Despite Cobh now playing with 14 men, they upped the intensity and scored 1-2 in the third quarter without reply. Glenville now ended the third quarter down two points, 1-7 to 3-3.
The second water break was critical and gave Glenville the gap to refocus and we started the fourth quarter with a determination to win the game and maximize our numerical advantage. Shane O’Callaghan quickly scored a point from a free to reduce the margin to a single point. It was now a game of end-to-end football with both sides attacking and defending with passion. Cobh then scored their third goal to lead by two points. Glenville built a counterattack from the kick-out and worked the ball the whole way up the pitch before Jack Counihan was fouled and we were awarded a penalty, which Shane O’Callaghan coolly put in the back of the net. Now Glenville was leading by a point with 6 minutes to go and again the game was end-to-end action. Shane O’Callaghan followed up his penalty score with another point from a free to extend the Glenville lead to two, before Jack Counihan scored a sublime point to see Glenville deservedly win the game by three points 2-10 (16) to Cobh’s 3-4 (13).

Captain Dean Field accepted the cup on behalf of Glenville. It was the best performance by this U15 squad in the whole year with great goalkeeping, excellent defending, great turnovers in midfield, superb work by the six forwards in taking scoring opportunities, holding our discipline and minimizing the numbers of frees conceded. It was a great way to end what has been a tough year for this team.

Scorers: Shane O’Callaghan 1-4 (1-0 penalty, 0-2 frees); Shayne Curtin 0-4; Darragh Collins 1-0; Mike O’Riordan 0-1 and Jack Counihan 0-1.

In 2021, both Watergrasshill GAA and Glenville GAA put their clubshops online with O'Neills Sportswear.

Coming up to the Christmas period, we are advising members of both clubs that club leisurewear ( e.g. jumpers, tracksuit bottoms and jackets) should be ordered online through the O'Neills website. O'Neills may have limited availability on certain items but keep an eye on the website as they are updating the online shop as soon as new stock comes in. Any leisurewear purchased from the O'Neills website with the Watergrasshill or Glenville crests sewn or printed onto it are considered personalised items and cannot be returned. Please refer to the sizing guide on the O'Neills website before purchasing any clothing.
