Bride Rovers Notes

Defeat in SHL opener.

On Sunday morning last, Bride Rovers Senior hurlers travelled to Caherlag to take on local side Erins Own in the opening round of the Red FM sponsored Senior Hurling League - in this our seventh season at Senior Level.
The Rovers started brightly and had the better of the opening exchanges. A long ball into the Erins Own square was fielded excellently by Donal Ryan who rounded the keeper to score a goal from the Rovers, a point minutes later by Barry Johnson extended our lead to 4 points but alarmingly we would not score for another 20 minutes while in the meantime Erins Own scored nine points without reply. Our defence was under pressure and this was not helped by the loss of Pa O'Driscoll with a leg injury. With minutes remaining in the half, Donal Ryan fielded another high ball and was fouled resulting in a penalty for the Rovers which Barry Johnson duly converted to reduce Erins Own lead to 2 points. Erins Own added another point just before the half time whistle to lead 0-10 to 2-01.
On the resumption the Rovers introduced Padraig Murphy & Kieran Collins, as the Rovers upped their performance, 2 points from Barry Johnson reduced the deficit to the minimum but unfortunately we were never able to regain the lead despite creating some good opportunities. Erins Own with the aid of the wind tacked on some points from easily conceded frees. However there was a marked improvement by the Rovers in the 2nd half and despite losing by 4 points there was some encouraging performances from many.
