GLORY ON THE DOUBLE FOR UNDEFEATED UNDER 17s

Rebel Óg East Fé17 Division 2 Football Championship Final

Killeagh 1-11 Aghada 0-5

Our Under 17 panel played their final game of the shortened 2021 season in Páirc na nGael, Ballinacurra on Sunday October 17th. It was their 11th game of the season and it was the 11th they won - across both codes - which is a remarkable record. This was a very entertaining game of football played by two fine teams whose defences were on top in the opening quarter. Both sides had wides before Aghada kicked the first point from a free and Daniel Walsh equalised with a fine point from play on 8 minutes. Sean Meade's first point on 16 minutes gave us a one point lead at the first water break.

In the second quarter our defence started to dominate, with Conor Meade, Ben Budds and Darragh O'Brien very busy. Our full forward line threatened throughout but Aghada's goalkeeper Eric Cunningham played very impressively, making a fine save from Colm Leahy, pushing his point-blank shot over the bar for a point. Further points followed from Sean's second free, Colm's second point, and Ben Walsh firing over, to give us a 0-6 to 0-2 half time lead.

Turning to play against the wind, our team turned on the style, kicking three points from play in the opening ten minutes - two from Daniel Walsh and one from Rory Motherway. Aghada battled hard but were let down by some poor finishing at times. They did have the ball in the Killeagh net mid-way through the third quarter but referee Eoin Coleman correctly over-ruled it for a square ball. The game-changer came on 52 minutes, when another Aghada attack was intercepted just in front of the Killeagh goal. The ball was worked out to Ben Walsh around the Killeagh '45 and he took off on a gut-bursting run that saw him sprint to the opposite '45 and give a perfect pass to Colm Leahy, who finished calmly to the net to put us ahead by 1-09 to 0-4.

Aghada continued to attack but our defence coped superbly, snuffing out all threats and setting up lightning quick counter-attacks, leading to two excellent points from Sean Meade in the final ten minutes to give us a cushion to see us home. Captain Rory Motherway accepted the cup from Rebel Og's Martin Leahy, much to the delight of the players, mentors and supporters.

Once again, it's worth acknowledging the great work done by this panel all year, and the management team of Declan Fogarty, James Maunsell, Seamus Considine, Ger Scully and Andrew Murphy, with assistance from our brilliant medical team of Pauline Meade and Sean Cummins. The future is looking good for football in Killeagh, with this victory added to Under 15 Premier 1 semi-final and Under 13 Premier 1 final appearances.

Team: Fionn Murphy, Pierce Geary, Ben Kelly Budds, David Buckley, Ben Fogarty, Rory Motherway, Conor Meade, Barry Walsh, Ben Walsh, Darragh O'Brien, Dylan McCarthy, Callum Martin White, Daniel Walsh, Sean Meade, Colm Leahy, Diarmuid Buckley, Harry Connon, Liam Considine, Jack O'Connor, Conor Burns, Michael Doherty.
