KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, October 3rd 2021

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

This weekend upcoming is a huge weekend for a lot of teams in their quest for silverware this season.

Our Senior hurlers take to the Coachford field on Sunday to face Newcestown, Junior B hurlers are in East Cork quarter final action next weekend. After their superb 13 point win over Lisgoold on Sunday, our Minor hurlers face Erin’s Own in the final next Saturday. Our Under 14 footballers take on Clyda Rovers in a semi final next Sunday and last but no means least, our Under 13 footballers go to war with Carrigaline in the Premier 1 final next Saturday.

All the details are below.

East Cork Oil Junior A Hurling Championship

Killeagh 6-19 Midleton 0-8

A task which looked hard to pass before the game, a task which was in our hands at half time just slipped out at Shane Hodgin’s final whistle at Shanagarry on Sunday despite a 29 point victory over Midleton which just was not enough.

We got off to a blinding start in the opening minutes as Dan Landers buried a ball to the back of the Midleton net. Points then added on by Dan, Jamie Landers & Davy Kelleher before Kelleher struck for goal himself in the opeing quarter, Killeagh led 2-5 to 0-3 at the water break.

The boys in green kept the momentum going when Dan Landers scored two more goals in the second quarter added on with a pair of Richie Long points saw Killeagh with a 16 point lead at the short whistle. We were in control of the game and in a semi final spot at this stage.

Cathal Fitzgibbon got our opening score of the second half in the 32nd minute before another Dan Landers bullet in the 35th minute kick on in the third quarter. Points from Richie & Matthew Murphy before a great cross field 1-2 between Richie Long & big Dan, finished to the net but Richie but unfortunately picked up a nasty injury in the process and missed the final 18 minutes of normal time.

We led by 6-13 to 0-6 at the water break and still had a commanding four point lead on scoring difference over Erins Own.

But then Erins Own struck for a quick 2-1 as Killeagh’s scores began to dry up. But the lads fought hard across the field. A trio of points from Podsie Leahy, a pair from Dara Motherway and a further score from Leahy kept the pressure on but goal chances went abegging in the end and after a heroic performance on the day, we lost out by three points on scoring difference to Erin’s Own who finished +24, we finished +21.

It was not to be our day but we set a massive standard to kick on with next year in our quest to win Jamesy Kelleher back once again. A massive thanks to all the management and players for their efforts today, just was not to be.

Team: Colin Walsh; Richie Landers, Aidan Morrision, Dylan Coleman; Jamie Landers, George Walsh-Wallace, Rob Sinclair; Evan Lane, Cathal Fitzgibbon; David Kelleher (Capt.), Matthew Murphy, Brian Collins; Sean Walsh, Dan Landers, Richie Long. Subs: Padraig Leahy, Dara Motherway, Aaron Walsh.

East Cork Oil Junior B Hurling Championship

Killeagh 3-16 Russell Rovers 1-11

An entertaining game of hurling, refereed by Jim Daly in Ballinacurra on Saturday afternoon last, saw our Junior B hurling team qualify for the quarter finals by defeating Russell Rovers. With five changes from the previous match against Youghal, we started well with Ciaran O'Rourke goaling after five minutes. A succession of wides from us and points from Rovers saw the game level after 13 minutes, before we got our radar adjusted with points from Ciaran Leahy (2), Ciaran O'Rourke, Shane Kearney, Darragh O'Connor, Dermot Motherway and Padraic Carroll saw us ahead by 1-7 to 0-6 at half time but facing into a strong wind.

Kevin Murphy's introduction at half time improved our defence, although Rovers had two early goal chances - one pointed and the other saved by Brian Murphy. Shane Kearney's excellent finish to the net on 34 minutes pushed us two goals ahead, while Jack O'Rourke made an instant impact in the final quarter, plucking a high ball on the right wing, soloing towards goal and burying a shot to the net. Rovers replied with a goal of their own before late points, including two excellent scores from Luke Fogarty, saw us finish strongly. Next weekend we play either Bride Rovers or St. Catherine's, depending on the result of the Youghal v Russell Rovers game on Tuesday evening.

Team: Brian Murphy; Paul Keniry, Dan Lucey, Owen Cosgrove; Barry Motherway, Tadhg O'Connor, David Collins; Aaron Fitzgibbon, Ciaran Leahy; Ger Collins, Padraic Carroll, Dermot Motherway; Shane Kearney, Ciaran O'Rourke, Darragh O'Connor. Subs: Kevin Murphy, Jack O'Rourke, Luke Fogarty, David Murphy, Colm Crowley.

Rebel Óg East Fé17 Division 1 Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Killeagh 4-21 Lisgoold 2-14

Our Under 17 hurlers emulated their football efforts of the previous week by qualifying for the Eastern 1 Hurling Final as a result of this victory over Lisgoold in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Sunday last. Erins Own will be our opponents in the final which takes place on Saturday next at 3pm in Mayfield.

Lisgoold started this game very sharply with Cork minor star Diarmuid Healy quickly into his stride, scoring three points in the opening six minutes. Our first score came courtesy of a Dylan McCarthy free

on 9 minutes, and we had taken the lead by the 14th minute with two more frees and a score from distance from Daniel Walsh, who had an excellent opening half. An unstoppable penalty from Diarmuid Healy levelled matters on 24 minutes (1-4 to 0-7) but we finished the half strongly with a goal from Sean Meade, giving us a lead of 1-10 to 1-7 at half time.

It took us a little while to get going after half time but David Buckley's great work, deserving of a goal, led to Colm Leahy finally raising the green flag, pushing us ahead by 2-10 to 1-8. Lisgoold didn't give up, and just after the water break the gap was just three - 2-13 to 1-13. However, our team went into top gear at this point, scoring 2-8 in the final fifteen minutes, and limiting Lisgoold to just one goal.

David Buckley was hugely influential in this quarter, setting up Dylan for the third goal, while Sean added the fourth in the final minutes. Callum Martin White, Ben Walsh, Barry Walsh and Conor Meade were others who shone, but in truth this was a real 1-20 performance. Well done to the whole panel, and to the management. One more challenge in hurling, and one in football!

Team: Fionn Murphy; Pierce Geary, Conor Meade, Harry Connon; Ben Fogarty, Ben Budds, Darragh O'Brien; Barry Walsh, Ben Walsh; Daniel Walsh, Dylan McCarthy, Callum Martin White; David Buckley, Sean Meade, Colm Leahy. Subs: Liam Considine, Rory Motherway, Diarmuid Buckley, Jack O'Connor, Conor Burns, Michael Doherty.
