KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, September 26th 2021

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

It will be a busy fortnight ahead for the club with crucial championship games across all age grades.

This weekend alone, Junior A & B hurlers both are out in championship this weekend with venues to be confirmed for both. The Under 17 footballers had a fine win last Friday and look forward to a hurling semi-final this weekend and a football final the following weekend. And the Under 13 footballers qualified for the Premier 1 Football final in a fortnight’s time!

Rebel Óg East Fé17 Division 2 Football Championship

Killeagh 3-15 Mayfield 0-5

Our Under 17 footballers put in an impressive performance in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Friday evening last to beat Mayfield in the East Division 2 Football Semi-Final, thereby qualifying for the final against Aghada which will probably be played on October 9th. Goals came from Sean Meade with two and Ben Walsh while Daniel Walsh, Dylan McCarthy, Pierce Geary and Barry Walsh were in fine scoring form up front, while Darragh O'Brien, Ben Fogarty, Ben Budds and Conor Meade snuffed out any threat from Mayfield at the other end of the pitch.

Team: Fionn Murphy; Liam Considine, Ben Kelly Budds, Harry Connon; Ben Fogarty, Rory Motherway, Conor Meade; Ben Walsh, Barry Walsh; Callum Martin White, Dylan McCarthy, Darragh O'Brien; Pierce Geary, Sean Meade, Daniel Walsh. Subs: Diarmuid Buckley, Jack O'Connor, Michael Doherty, Conor Burns.

Best wishes to the hurlers who take on Lisgoold in the hurling semi-final on Sunday October 3rd at 12pm in Killeagh

Rebel Óg Coiste Premier 1 Football Semi-Final

Killeagh 4-13 Bishopstown 2-7

Killeagh Under 13’s played Bishoptown in the P1 Football semi-final at home on 24th September.

The first quarter was a close encounter. It was 3 points each at the first water break. The lads improved significantly after this. We outscored Bishopstown by 1-7 to 0-2 in the next 15 minutes to see us lead by 8 points at half time, the goal coming after a great team move which was finished to net by Cormac. A feature of the second quarter was the work rate and interplay around the middle third.

Bishopstown scored a goal at the start of the second half, but the lads responded immediately. A great through ball by Ben saw Andrew win the foot race before calmly slotting home a goal. The lads drove on from this point and two goals from Ben (a well converted penalty, followed a left footed finish) saw us in control. The lads finished out the match as convincing winners.

This was a super effort from all the lads. They recovered strongly from the disappointment of losing narrowly in the P1 hurling semi-final last week to produce a top-quality display.

Best on the night were Patrick, Rian O’Connor (dominant at full back), Callum (led the defence), and Alex Howey (settling really well into wing back), Cormac & Ruben got on top at midfield, Andrew (got on lots of ball and kicked some lovely scores), Cathal (continued his great form), Ryan Murphy (very clever in possession) and Ben (kicked some super scores)

We will now play Carrigaline in the Premier 1 Under 13 Football final which is provisionally fixed for Saturday 9th October.

Team: John Farquhar, Patrick Dineen, Rian O’Connor, Adam Barry, Alex Fogarty, Callum Power, Alex Howey, Cormac Deane (1-1), Ruben O’Riordan (0-2), Billy Guerin, Andrew Brenner (1-2), Cathal Brennan (0-2), Ryan Murphy, Ben Geary (2-5), Rian Lane (0-1) Subs: Darragh Sheehan, Cormac Delaney, Daniel Geary, Seanan McDonnell, Fionán O’Connell, Tony Kenneally

Our U12 hurlers won the plate final of the famous Willie Ryan tournament Saturday in Aghada, beating Cobh in the plate final. The lads got off to a great start defeating Cobh in the first game. They went to the main field and drew with Aghada in the second match. Unfortunately, they lost to a strong St. Catherine team who eventually went on to win the tournament.

Thanks to the Aghada club for the hospitality and well done to the lads on the day.
