FOOTBALLERS BOW OUT OF CHAMPIONSHIP

Michael O’Connor Motor Factors Junior A Football Championship Quarter Final

Cobh 1-9 Glenbower Rovers 0-10

Our Junior ‘A’ football team bowed out of this year's championship at the quarter final stage after a battling performance in Ballinacurra last Friday evening. Despite the best efforts of David Kelleher, who scored four excellent points, Ciaran O'Brien, Adrian Galvin, Richie and Sean Long and Cathal Deane, we failed to close the five point gap that Cobh opened up with their goal just after half time, which left them ahead by 1-7 to 0-5, and bowed out as we ran out of clock.

With tough conditions on a heavy pitch after the day’s rain, Cobh took an early lead and led by 0-4 to 0-3 at the first water break and by 0-7 to 0-5 at half time. A spirited comeback after Cobh's goal saw us come very close with a couple of shots inches wide of the post, while some good defending from Cobh kept them ahead at Pa Beausang's final whistle, thereby ending our 2021 football campaign. Many thanks to the players and management for their efforts in 2021.

Team: David Quinlan; Padraig Leahy, Barry Motherway, Aidan Morrison; Adrian Galvin, Ciaran O'Brien, Robbie Treacy; Dara Motherway, Dinny Walsh; Eoghan Keniry, Cathal Deane, Richie Long; Sean Walsh, Sean Long, David Kelleher. Substitutes: Dylan Hogan, Keane Kelly Budds, Ger Collins, Bryan McCarthy.

UNDER 13 HURLERS FLYING HIGH

Killeagh Under 13’s Premier 1 Hurling League

Ballincollig 0-1 Killeagh 3-19

The Under 13’s played their second match of the Premier 1 Hurling League, away to Ballincollig on Friday, 20th August. Killeagh produced an excellent performance throughout to run out comfortable winners at the full-time whistle.

It was a great team effort with some good defensive work allied to some great team scores. We now face Douglas in two weeks time with the winner qualifying for a semi-final spot in the Premier 1 Hurling League.

Best for Killeagh on the night were Rian O’Connor, Adam Barry (excellent defending), Cormac Deane, Alex Howey, Andrew Brenner, Callum Power (drove forward and scored an outstanding point), Cathal Brennan, Ben Geary (superb shooting all night) and John Farquhar.

Next up for the Under 13’s is Premier 1 Football League away to Ballincollig on Friday 28th August at 7:30pm.

Team: Seán O’Leary; Patrick Dineen, Rian O’Connor, Adam Barry; Callum Power (0-1), Cormac Deane, Cormac Delaney; Andrew Brenner, Alex Howey; Alex Fogarty, Ben Geary (0-13), Cathal Brennan (0-1); Seanan McDonnell, John Farquhar (1-3), Billy Guerin (2-1). Subs: Rian Lane, Darragh Sheehan, Tony Kenneally, Daniel Geary, Fionan O’Connell

UNDER 15 HURLERS FAIL TO QUALIFY BY A NARROW MARGIN

This year’s Feile Hurling qualifiers took place in Aghada on Saturday morning. Three round qualifiers of 12 minutes a side with the top team to progress to Cork County semi-finals. Our opening game versus our old rivals Youghal started well for Killeagh with 1-01 without reply, with the short game we managed to stay in front and ran out eventual winners in a lively contested game. On to Aghada for the second game, we had to battle harder in a much tighter game that involved trading scores throughout the game. Winning eventually by a single point we marched onto the last game against Midleton.

Unfortunately, this game proved to be a much more difficult outing, the valiant efforts of the first two games was to prove too much for our squad and early scores from an excellent Midleton team proved too much of a hill for us to climb eventually losing out by 7 points.

With 3 teams poised on 2 wins each (Midleton, Killeagh and Youghal) it came down to the rules of Feile which allowed Midleton to go through on the least amount scored against with Killeagh coming second.

All in all, it was a good day of hurling against 2 Premier 1 teams and a Premier 2 team. Well done to the lads involved and onwards to the Football Feile next Saturday in Glanmire.

FÉILE NA PÉIL NEXT WEEKEND

The annual Féile na Péil weekend takes place next weekend, again in a much reduced capacity. Next Saturday 28th August will see all the Cork County fight for those elusive spots in the mini All Ireland Hurling Series later this year.

In Cork, all of Premier 1 & Premier 2 teams have been drawn together and we have got Glanmire & Carrigaline in the three-team group. We face the two teams in Glanmire next Saturday August 28th. We play Glanmire at 10am & Carrigaline at 11:30am. The top team in the group qualifies for the semi-final which has to be confirmed.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES

With the County Hurling Championships not starting until September with the hurling now scheduled to start on September 11th/12th. We got confirmation this past week that Killeagh will face Cloyne on the

opening weekend on Saturday September 11th at 3pm in Castlemartyr. Our games against Fr O’Neills & Kanturk have to be confirmed.

The East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship was drawn last week too and sees St. Itas, Killeagh & Midleton in the one group. Killeagh will face St. Itas on the weekend of Sept 11/12 with the loser out the following weekend against Midleton. The winner of the opneing tie plays Midleton in early October. The winner qualifies for the semi-final along with the best Runner Up of the three groups.

A GREAT WEEK FOR REBELS FANS DESPITE SENIOR LOSS

Two out of three is not too bad even though the Senior team couldn’t get over the line on Sunday. A great win for Pat and his Under 20’s on Wednesday night over Galway and a dominant display from Noel Furlong and his minor team on Saturday night sees Cork back in the limelight of Inter County glory. First minor All Ireland in 20 years and two Under 20 All Ireland’s in six weeks is a serious achievement from all those in the background working at the ground level.

Despite the seniors losing on Sunday, all is not that bad. An All Ireland final appearance, which many may have thought may not be possible before the start of the championship is surely a sign of improvement. Let’s keep supporting the lads during the early stages of the 2022 season.

REBELS BOUNTY

The August draw of the 2021 Rebels Bounty will take place on Thursday August 26th at 7:30pm. Further details on the streaming to follow next week. The 2022 Rebels Bounty will be launched later this year. We will be seeking your support once again. With seven winners in seven months, we have a really good record with winners this season. Let’s hope we can have another winner in the August draw.
