KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, August 15th 2021

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

A reminder because of Cork getting to the All Ireland Hurling final, the County Hurling Championships will not start until September with the hurling now scheduled to start on September 11th/12th. We awaiting for confirmed fixtures on those games.

The East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship was drawn last week too and sees St. Itas, Killeagh & Midleton in the one group. Killeagh will face St. Itas on the weekend of Sept 11/12 with the loser out the following weekend against Midleton. The winner qualifies for the semi final along with the best Runner Up of the three groups.

The annual Féile na nGael weekend takes place next weekend in a much reduced capacity. Next weekend will see all the Cork County fight for those elusive spots in the mini All Ireland Hurling Series later this year. Féile na Péil will take place the weekend after.

In Cork, all of Premier 1 & Premier 2 teams have been drawn together and we have got Aghada, Midleton & Youghal in the three groups. We face the three teams in Rostellan next Saturday August 21st starting at 10am.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

A superb week lies ahead for the Cork fans. All Ireland Under 20 Hurling Final against Galway on Wednesday night in Semple Stadium, All Ireland Minor Football Semi-Final versus Tyrone on Saturday afternoon, All Ireland Minor Hurling Final against Galway on Saturday night and finally the big one, Cork vs Limerick in the Senior All Ireland Hurling Final on Sunday in Croke Park.

Some week of sport! Make sure all this week, wear the red and white to support all teams and management. Get the red and white bunting, flags & cork t-shirts out. Best of luck to all four teams this week.

Rebel Óg Coiste Under 15 Premier 1 Football Championship

Bishopstown 4-4 Killeagh 4-14

For the last of our group games in the Premier 1 Under 15 Football Championship, we travelled to Bishopstown on Saturday afternoon for a must win game if we were to progress in the competition. A 15-minute delayed start while we waited for a referee, Bishopstown got off to a dream start with 2-2 in the first 6 minutes putting us 8 points adrift but that is all they would score in the first half.

Sean Meade finished off a well worked goal after 13 minutes.

While we were creating good opportunities in the first half our execution was letting us down. At half time, the home side led 2-2 to 1-3.

After the halftime break, we scored first and pushed up high on the Bishopstown kick outs winning many turnovers and scoring freely in the second half. As the game progressed, we eventually got to grips with the Bishopstown plays and fought our way back into contention.

We continued to press and ran out easy winners after an excellent team performance. Goals in the second half coming from Meade, Ben & Barry Walsh to round out ten-point victors. We have finished second in our group which sees us through to the semi-final of the competition where we will face Ballincollig in the coming weeks.

Up next is the Féile weekends.

Team; Fionn Brennan; Oren Cunningham, Harry Connan, Michael Doherty; Sean Lynch, Conor Byrne, Darragh Prenter(c); Ben Walsh, Barry Walsh; Ben Geary, Fionn Murphy, Cormac Deane; Michael O’Donovan, Sean Meade, Colm Cowhig. Subs: Cian O Riordan, Arron Dignam, Eoin Roche, Andrew Brenner, Tadhg Considine, Jacob Dignam, Cathal Brenner, Billy Guerin

Rebel Óg Coiste Premier 1 Football League

Killeagh 3-9 Bishopstown 2-6

Killeagh Under 13’s played their second football match of the Premier 1 league, at home to Bishopstown on Friday, 13th August. Killeagh started well with two early points, but Bishopstown took over for the rest of the first quarter scoring 1-3 without reply. The lads came out after the water break with a better attitude and reeled off some great scores including Ben Geary with a great goal after a well-timed pass from Andrew Brenner. The hosts led 1-6 to 1-5 at half time.

We got on top around the middle of the field in the second half and worked some great team scores to win by 6 points. We now top our section going into the final round of fixtures.

Best for Killeagh on the night were Patrick Dineen, Rian O’Connor, Alex Fogarty, Cormac Deane, Andrew Brenner, Cathal Brennan (who won great possession and showed well all game) and Ben Geary (a constant threat).

Next up for the Under 13’s is Premier 1 Hurling League away to Ballincollig on Friday 20th August at 7:30pm.
