KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, July 25th 2021

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

We will have an online Extraordinary General Meeting on Monday next July 26th at 8.30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and vote on the following motion:

"The Executive Committee of Killeagh GAA propose that the Real Property owned by Killeagh GAA be vested in One Trustee, being the GAA Corporate Trustee (GCT). The trust company, Iontaobhas Corparáideach Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Cuideachta Faoi Theorainn Ráthaíochta ("the GAA Corporate Trustee"), will hold on trust, real property, owned by Killeagh GAA Club in accordance with the Code of Trustees;"

The reason for this proposed change to our governance is that this change, if enacted, will simplify the process of applying for and accessing Government funding, and will reduce the administrative burden in relation to matters of governance and trusteeship.

Kathy Slattery, GAA Head of National Finance, Croke Park, will give a presentation to all members at the EGM (she has previously spoken to committee members on this matter). Following this, it will be open to members to ask questions or to seek clarifications in advance of a vote. The vote will be conducted via an online link, with one vote allowed per club member present (online) at the meeting.

Hope to see as many of you as possible online on Monday at 8:30pm

If you require the link to join, please contact for more information

This week’s Golf notes start with something slightly different.

On behalf of the Golf Society, we would like congratulate West Waterford Golf Club member Seamus Power on winning his first PGA Tour event at the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky late on Sunday night. Seamus came from six shots down at one stage in the final round to force a playoff against JT Poston but won the playoff on the sixth playoff hole.

Not many Golf Classics can say that a previous winner of Golf Classic has now gone onto win a PGA Tour event, but Seamus Power done that, winning the Killeagh GAA Golf Classic in 2003.

He played with James Fogarty, Nigel Desmond & Jason Law that year. The three lads rocked up and were short a man (it was a four-ball classic at the time). Ray Rochford said to the lads ‘there is a nice young fella over there, he will do. Plays well and is handy.’ Seamus came across off putting green and was fierce quiet. James told these pages on Monday morning that he was quiet fella but an incredible golfer and a real nice guy! Their prize that year was four portable televisions.!!

Seamus called home in December 2019 to see the club as we were presenting our prizes at our Christmas Outing in West Waterford. He greeted many of our members and players on the day, many of whom knew he played in the Olympics in 2016 in Rio but did not know too much more about him! Ray Rochford, one of our longest leaders & members in the Society was one of the first to meet him at the door as the prizes were being presented and in simple old Ray fashion, he put out the hand to shake Seamus’s hand and said ‘Welcome home lad, you are doing great!’ Many congrats, Seamus! P.S. our Golf Society Handicapping Secretary (Ray) has cut your allowances for our next outing again!

We have been running our Golf Classic in West Waterford Golf Club for many years and we appreciate all the help they give us every year! Once again, West Waterford Golf Club allowing us to run for our 25th Annual Classic so we implore you to get out and support the Golf Classic and all at West Waterford Golf Club. Not too many clubs in the country can say they had two Walker Cup players (equivalent of Ryder Cup for amateurs) & one of those to be a PGA Tour winner! It could be you next! Check out the poster attached for more information.

Our next outing, round 4 of the Golfer of the Year competition is to Cobh Golf Club on Thursday 29th July times from 1:50pm and the Timesheet is now open with Ray Rochford on 0872330054.

Our next Tuesday outing is to Lismore on Tuesday July 27th. Text Ray if you are interested in going along.

All the matches have taken place 2021 Killeagh GAA Golf Society Matchplay. The second-round draw will take place later this week.

Our annual three-day Killeagh GAA Golf Classic will take place from Wednesday September 1st to Saturday September 4th at West Waterford Golf Club. Yes, that is four days of the 25th Annual Killeagh GAA Golf Classic!

This is the club’s biggest fundraiser this year and we need your help now more than ever. We are looking for sponsors for Tee Boxes, Classic Sponsors & teams to get on board with us. We are inside the final two months before the classic.

If you are interested in playing or helping out in the four-day extravaganza, the good advice is to contact Ray Rochford ASAP to get your optimum timeslot as the Time Sheet is now open!

If you are interested in joining the Killeagh GAA Golf Society for their variety of trips away & outings for 2021 or 2022, give Ray Rochford a call or a text on 087-2330054.
