KILLEAGH GAA GOLF SOCIETY:

This week’s Golf notes start with something slightly different.

On behalf of the Golf Society, we would like congratulate West Waterford Golf Club member Seamus Power on winning his first PGA Tour event at the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky late on Sunday night. Seamus came from six shots down at one stage in the final round to force a playoff against JT Poston but won the playoff on the sixth playoff hole.

Not many Golf Classics can say that a previous winner of Golf Classic has now gone onto win a PGA Tour event, but Seamus Power done that, winning the Killeagh GAA Golf Classic in 2003.

He played with James Fogarty, Nigel Desmond & Jason Law that year. The three lads rocked up and were short a man (it was a four-ball classic at the time). Ray Rochford said to the lads ‘there is a nice young fella over there, he will do. Plays well and is handy.’ Seamus came across off putting green and was fierce quiet. James told these pages on Monday morning that he was quiet fella but an incredible golfer and a real nice guy! Their prize that year was four portable televisions.!!

Seamus called home in December 2019 to see the club as we were presenting our prizes at our Christmas Outing in West Waterford. He greeted many of our members and players on the day, many of whom knew he played in the Olympics in 2016 in Rio but did not know too much more about him! Ray Rochford, one of our longest leaders & members in the Society was one of the first to meet him at the door as the prizes were being presented and in simple old Ray fashion, he put out the hand to shake Seamus’s hand and said ‘Welcome home lad, you are doing great!’ Many congrats, Seamus! P.S. our Golf Society Handicapping Secretary (Ray) has cut your allowances for our next outing again!

We have been running our Golf Classic in West Waterford Golf Club for many years and we appreciate all the help they give us every year! Once again, West Waterford Golf Club allowing us to run for our 25th Annual Classic so we implore you to get out and support the Golf Classic and all at West Waterford Golf Club. Not too many clubs in the country can say they had two Walker Cup players (equivalent of Ryder Cup for amateurs) & one of those to be a PGA Tour winner! It could be you next! Check out the poster attached for more information.
