Castlelyons Notes

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended Monday 5th July 2021.

Castlelyons girls create history and take 2020 county minor title.

Castlelyons 7-14 Ballinascarthy 1-19

Castlelyons Camogie Club created another piece of history as the minor team defeated Ballinascarthy at Castle Road on a beautiful sunny evening in the delayed final of the 2020 championship.  What a pity the local support could not travel as the numbers were limited as it was a close encounter with excellent hurling and score-taking shown by both teams.  Ballinascarthy started well but Castlelyons took the lead early on after scoring two goals and held that lead for much of the game.  Ballinascarthy fought back, battled hard to be well in the game at half time on a score of 2-6 to 0-7

The teams exchanged points during the early part of the second half with Castlelyons holding a 4-point lead going down the stretch.  Ballinascarthy pegged back the scores and after a late exchange of goals, Castlelyons scored a great point in the last puck of the game to draw the game level in normal time on the score line of 3-9 to 1-15. Then Ballinascarthy took a 3-point lead in extra time, but then Castlelyons scored 2 goals in quick succession, but we came back to control the game winning on a score line of 7-14 to 1-19.  There were some great performances all over the field from Castlelyons and an excellent team effort was required to beat a fast and talented Ballinascarthy side. The entire panel put in a great effort over the course of the season for Castlelyons to win their first Camogie Minor title.   Congratulations and well done to the girls, their Coach Mark Flynn, mentors and all involved. Castlelyons minor hurlers defeated in Championship.

Castlelyons 1-8 St Dominics 1-11.

Last Wednesday, our U17 hurlers travelled to Shanballymore to take on St Dominics in the U17 Hurling round robin championship. St Dominics are an amalgamation of Glanworth and Shanballymore. In what turned out to be a low scoring game, Castlelyons eventually came up short but, given that it was our first hurling game of the year, we showed enough promise to say that we will improve as the championship goes on. We lost on a score line of 1-11 to 1-08.

Our panel on the night was: - Aaron Fenton, Anthony Moron, Colman O’ Flynn, Gearoid O’ Sullivan, Oisin Morrisson, Mathew Rosner, Marc Callinan, William Verling, Patrick Dooley, Brian Spillane. Cian O’ Callaghan, Leon Shanahan, Cathal O’ Riordan, Adam Lardner, Ritchie Barry, Jack Cremin, Olan Lenehan.

Junior A Footballers defeated in East Cork Championship.

Castlelyons 0-5 Glenbower Rovers 0-7

Our Junior A footballers are back in the East Cork Championship but suffered defeat to Glenbower Rovers in the round robin competition.  In fairness to Castlelyons they dominated this game for a long time, but scores were hard come due to a lack of practice.  Our lads done very well in the first half as we had some great turnovers, and good defending.  We kept the score down to just one point each at the first water break and then led by 0-3 to 0-1 at referee Pa O’Driscoll’s half time whistle.  We were a little off the pace in the second half and then when we had a few chances we failed to convert as Glenbower put 0-6 on the board we made a game of it with two long-range points, but Glenbower ran our winners by 0-2.  Well done to all the lads who played as they are keeping the football going while there is a concentration on the hurling but the promotion of both codes in the club is providing a choice and the football helps develop a bit of physicality in players too.  Next up is Carrigtwohill, winners over Castlemartyr, in two weeks' time. We have a bit of work to do but we are improving and will be ready.
