KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, July 4th, 2021

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

Just a quick reminder as per GAA/Camogie/LGFA Covid Guidelines, NSHC (attached) & Government Regulations, all spectators and officials who are not involved directly with a match in Páirc Uí Chinnéide are strongly advised to wear a face mask/covering while on the grounds. This is for your health and safety and the health and safety of those around you. The more efficient we are wearing masks for the summer, the more people who will be allowed to attend events including GAA matches over the coming weeks & months.

Michael O’Connor Motor Factors East Cork Junior A Football Championship

Glenbower Rovers 0-7 Castlelyons 0-5

A fantastic 20-minute cameo from super sub Bryan McCarthy saw our Junior A footballers leave Lisgoold on Sunday afternoon with two points in the bag in their round-robin championship after this opening round victory over Castlelyons. The first half saw both teams show their lack of match practice, with poor shooting, multiple turnovers and handling errors, along with some good defending, keep the score down to just one point each at the first water break (Eoghan Keniry on the mark for Glenbower) and Castlelyons led by 0-3 to 0-1 at referee Pa O’Driscoll’s half time whistle.

The second half also started sluggishly, with no scores added on until Richie Long and Sean Walsh kicked two points in quick succession to level the match on 43 minutes. Bryan McCarthy, just on the pitch, kicked his first point soon after to give us the lead for the first time on 44 minutes and he added three further scores from play and from long-range dead ball kicks in the final quarter to give us victory, despite a good fight-back from Castlelyons, with two long-range points of their own. Next up is Castlemartyr in two weeks' time.

Plenty of work to be done, although the signs were encouraging with good displays from our defence as a whole, where Ciaran O’Brien and Padraig Leahy were very industrious throughout.

Team: Dave Quinlan; Dan Lucey, Barry Motherway, Aidan Morrison; Adrian Galvin, Ciaran O’Brien, Padraig Leahy; Cathal Deane, Dara Motherway; Rob Sinclair, Eoghan Keniry, Richie Long; Robbie Treacy, Sean Walsh, David Kelleher. Subs Used: Ger Griffin, Bryan McCarthy, Dylan Hogan.

Rebel Óg East Fé17 Division 1 Hurling Championship

Cobh 2-11 Killeagh 2-23 (Wednesday)

Killeagh 5-12 Watergrasshill 2-6 (Sunday)

Our minor (Under 17) hurlers had a very productive week, with two excellent performances providing wins away to Cobh on Wednesday evening and at home to Watergrasshill on a wet Sunday evening. The spine of the team was very dominant in Cobh, with Conor Meade at full-back, Ben Walsh at centre-back, Ben Kelly Budds and Darragh O’Brien at midfield all very impressive, while Dylan McCarthy and Sean Meade at centre-forward and full-forward were very accurate and dangerous every time they had possession. Colm Leahy and Daniel Walsh were also busy raising flags, with Colm Leahy’s goal on 26 minutes giving us some relief after Cobh’s goal on 22 minutes. Sean Meade got some excellent scores in the second half after Cobh had rallied with the opening three points, and Barry Walsh’s goal finished the game off in the final quarter.

Sunday brought heavy rain and a greasy surface, and a modicum of revenge for our hurlers after they were well beaten by Watergrasshill (5-17 to2-6) in the U16 semi-final last August. This game was also a slow burner, with scores level 0-4 to 1-1 at the first water break. Just at the right time, on 26 minutes, goal poacher Colm Leahy was again in the right place to finish to the net after excellent work from Barry Walsh and Sean Meade, giving us a 1-7 to 1-3 half time lead. Barry Walsh provided the assist for the second goal on 35 minutes, finished expertly by Sean Meade, while Ciaran Brennan and Callum Martin White also raised green flags in the final quarter. This was a great team performance with Fionn Murphy excellent in goals, Pierce Geary and Harry Connon very efficient in their corner-back positions, while David Buckley put in a great effort before he was injured late in the game. After these two games, Killeagh and Fr. O’Neills have both won their first two games, while last year’s finalists Cobh and Watergrasshill are both pointless and out of contention for this year’s cup. We will face Fr. O’Neills in August after Cork Minors are out of championship to decide who tops the table. We are currently leading with a +30 points difference to Fr O’Neills +24.

Team: Fionn Murphy, Pierce Geary, Conor Meade, Harry Connon, Ben Fogarty, Ben Walsh, Rory Motherway, Ben Kelly Budds, Darragh O’Brien, Daniel Walsh, Dylan McCarthy, Barry Walsh, David Buckley, Colm Leahy, Sean Meade, Callum Martin White, Diarmuid Buckley, Conor Burns, Ciaran Brennan, Liam Considine, Jack O’Connor.

Rebel Óg Coiste Fé13 Group 2 Football League

Carrigtwohill 4-4 Killeagh 4-10

Killeagh recorded their second league victory in Under 13 Football on Friday 2nd July. Carrigtwohill started stronger but resolute defending and some good points by Rian Lane (2) and Ben Geary saw us lead 0-3 to 0-1 at the water break. Killeagh then took control scoring 2-4 in a short period. Cormac Deane and Seanan McDonnell with two well taken goals and Ben with four excellent points without reply and we seemed to be in control. However, two poorly conceded goals allowed Carrigtwohill back in the game at the end of the first half.

In the second half, Carrig started brightly with a few good early scores. The lads responded well with a great goal from Ben, three super Andrew Brenner points and a clever goal from Seanan to seal the win.

All 18 players contributed and battled to the end, with great performances on the night from Rian O’Connor, Diarmuid Fitzpatrick, Patrick Dineen and Callum Power in defence, Ruben O’Riordan and Cormac at midfield and Andrew, Ben and Seanan upfront.

Next up is Sars at home in Group 1 Hurling next Friday night at 6:30pm.

Team: John Farquhar; Patrick Dineen, Rian O’Connor, Diarmuid Fitzpatrick; Billy Guerin, Callum Power, Cathal Brennan; Cormac Deane (1-0), Ruben O’Riordan; Ryan Murphy, Andrew Brenner (0-3), Alex Howey; Rian Lane (0-2), Ben Geary (1-5), Seanan McDonnell (2-0).
