Ulster Bank Co Minor “A” Hurling League – Final

Kilbrittain 2-14 Inniscarra 0-09

A strong final quarter aided Kilbrittain to see off the challenge of Inniscarra in this Ulster Bank Co Minor “A” Hurling League Final which was played in Kilmurry on Saturday afternoon last.

In what was a fine competitive contest in which both sides had their moments Kilbrittain had a better balanced side and their ability to pick off some long range points at crucial moments gave them the advantage. Also the introduction of Jamie Wall for the second half added to their scoring power and his contribution of 1-04 showed his value to the side. On the other hand Inniscarra relied greatly on the point scoring ability of Chris O’Connor from placed balls but unfortunately for them the goal they needed to boost their challenge eluded them leaving their opponents to run out worthy winners.

Kilbrittain got the proceedings off to fine start when James Moloney pointed a long range free in the opening minute but Inniscarra settled into the game and with three pointed frees from Chris O’Connor and a superb effort from play by Frank Olden saw the lead 0-04 to 0-01 by the 10th minute. Inniscarra were now taking the game to their opponents but gradually Kilbrittain began to up the tempo of the game and with Ivan Burke, Darran Hickey and James Moloney leading by example from defence they began to apply more pressure on the Inniscarra defence. Conor Moloney was coming more into the fray in midfield while up front Chris Hickey and Alex O’Brien were looking lively. A second pointed long range free from James Moloney started their comeback and with four from Conor Moloney, both from play and placed balls, and another from Chris Hickey they eased themselves into a 0-07 to 0-04 lead by the 28th minute. Inniscarra were then unlucky when a goal-bound attempt went at the wrong side of the upright and with O’Connor and Moloney exchanging pointed frees the “Carbery” side went in at the break leading 0-08 to 0-05.

On the resumption Inniscarra who were being well served by Kieran Rice in goal, Stephen O’Sullivan, Aidan Carr, Frank Olden and Chris O’Connor reduced the deficit with a pointed free from O’Connor. The induction of Jamie Wall soon began to pay dividends when he maintained Kilbrittain’s advantage with a similar score and as both sides exchanged some well taken points the margin was still only two points as the game entered its final quarter and again Inniscarra could count themselves a little unlucky when another goal-bound shot was taken off the line and scrambled to safety.. It was then that Wall burst into the scene with a brace of well executed points after he received the final pass on both occasions from James Moloney to give them some breathing space and he virtually sealed their victory when in the 52nd minute he weaved his way through the Inniscarra defence to crash the ball to the net. Although the “Muskerry” side refused to throw in the towel replying with another pointed free from O’Connor this was not to be their day as Kilbrittain confirmed their authority with a point from Conor Moloney followed by a goal from sub Conor O’Donovan and deep into injury time Alex O’Brien completed their scoring when swung over a fine point to see his side run out winners on the final scoreline of 2-14 to 0-09.

After the game the cup was presented to the winning captain, James Moloney, by Martin O’Brien PRO of the Cork Co Minor Board to the delight of the Kilbrittain supporters.
