Derry O'Brien RIP

18 March, 2020

All at East Cork Board extend sincere condelences to the family of our former President and Chairman Derry O'Brien, Cobh.  Derry hailed from Ovens in The Muskerry Division and was involved in GAA both on and off the field throughout his long life.  His involvement began with The Éire Óg Club before he and his brothers moved to East Cork.  An All Ireland Intermediate Hurling Medal winner with Cork in 1965 and an Intermediate Medal winner with Cobh before becoming a referee.  Derry served Cobh GAA in many capacities and along with others was instrumental in the purchase and development of the new field and Clubhouse.  Before becoming President of The East Cork Board he served as Chairman from 1974 to 1978 alongside current President Willie Ring (Cloyne) and James O'Flynn (Ladysbridge). Derry was a very likeable, affable character who always had a kind word for delegates and his many friends from every Club within the Division and outside it.  His family continue to be immersed in GAA in East Cork and his loss will surely be felt by many.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Nora, daughters Deirdre, Jacqui and Rhona and all his extended family at this time.
