Lisgoold Club Notes

01/03/20 – Division 1 Football League – Carraig na bhFear 1-6 Lisgoold 1-9

Lisgoold continued their promising start to the football season with another win in Carraig na bhFear This match had fallen foul to the weather a few weekends earlier and the weather threaten to have this game rescheduled again howeveir with the late change of venue it was allowed to go ahead.

With the Carrig na bhFear pitch being in good condition considering the weather, but teams found it tough with the underfoot condition. Lisgoold started well however struggled to get points on the scoreboard. Ranging runs from the corner backs James O’Driscoll and Luke Walsh and commanding defensive and attacking displays by half backs Cathal Hickey and Cian Scannell, Lisgoold began to edge ahead. However, a quick turnover and attack by Carraig na bhFear, led to a penalty and the resulting score put them into a 1-point lead at half time.

Lisgoold upped the tempo in the first 10 minutes of the second half and led by 2 points when Mark Hegarty finished to the roof of the net to give Lisgoold some breathing space. The teams traded scores over the next 10 minutes. A late surge by Carraig, lead to the score being reduced to 3 points but the Lisgoold lads held out to secure their third victory in the league.

08/03/20 – Division 1 Hurling League – Erins Own 1-7 Lisgoold 2-16

Lisgoold begun their hurling campaign for 2020 with a convincing win in Caherlag. In a match where all four seasons of weather were endured by the players, Lisgoold chose to play with the wind in the first half. Despite a bit of rustiness, Lisgoold settled into the match quickly and began to notch up decent scores from all angles of their opponent’s half, taking a commanding 5-point lead. Lisgoold began to turn the screw and the inside forward line were causing all sorts of problems for the Erins Own defence. Eventually their hard work paid off when James O’Driscoll and Mark Hegarty, both playing their first junior match, scored well taken goals. Lisgoold head into the dressing rooms at half time with a comfortable lead.

The second half begun with Lisgoold defence knowing the elements would make there task much harder than the first half. With resilient defending and intelligent support play, the defenders managed to keep the Erins Own attack at bay and resort to long range shots. They were eventually breached with 5 minutes to go but the Lisgoold forwards managed to add on a few points to keep a safe distance on the scoreboard. A successful first game of the season but there will be much bigger challenges ahead for this Lisgoold side.
