RedFM Division 1 Hurling League

Killeagh 2-14 Na Piarsaigh 0-15

A battling, hard-working performance by the hosts saw the opening two league points of the 2020 campaign remain in Páírc Uí Chinnéide. It was Na Piarsaigh who opened the scoring with a point from long range before a quick reply from Eoghan Keniry from placed ball levelled procedings inside the first two minutes. This led to the deadlock being broken by a great team worked goal finished spectacularly by Gary Leahy. Leahy added a point off the kickout and a further score from Keniry saw a lead of 1-3 to 0-1 after five minutes. The city side added two points from play before scores from Matthew Murphy, Keniry (2 frees) & Ryan McCarthy before a scramble on the Na Piarsaigh 20m line saw Andrew Leahy claim possession from the ruck and bury the ball into the Na Piarsaigh net. At Mark Murphy’s Half Time whistle, Killeagh 2-8 Na Piarsaigh 0-6.

Na Piarsaigh got off to the quicker start in the second half the four of the first five points to reduce the margin to four points. Substitute Philip O’Neill got his name on the score sheet at the end of third quarter with a superb long-range point. The Leahy brothers added a further point each to their respective tallies. Na Piarsaigh got three points (one from Christopher Joyce who played with Cork on Sunday) but Ryan McCarthy rounded out the scoring on the night in the 59th minute with a 25-yard free to deliver the two vital league points for the home side. It must be said, there will be four sides relegated from this 16-team league.

Team: Colin Walsh; Cathal Fitzgibbon, Jack O’Rourke, Dylan Hogan; Patrick O’Brien, Cian Fogarty, Killian Treacy; Matthew Murphy, Keane Kelly Budds; Kieran Lane, Andrew Leahy, Aaron Walsh; Eoghan Keniry, Gary Leahy, Ryan McCarthy. Subs Used: Philip O’Neill, Sean Walsh.

RedFM Division 1 Hurling League

Charleville 1-17 Killeagh 0-13

When Tuesday’s performance was so delightful to watch, the same could not be said for last Sunday’s away game against Charleville, albeit the squad on the day were very much depleted due to illness and injuries to various players. Charleville got the better start in this Division 1 League encounter as two opening points inside five minutes. Eoghan Keniry opened the Killeagh account with a point from placed ball. In the 7th minute. Keniry added a score from play and further scores from Cian Fogarty, Andrew Leahy & Keniry again in the 30th minute saw the score Charleville 0-9 to Killeagh’s 0-5 at Kilworth referee Aidan Hyland’s half time whistle.

In the second half, we were aided with a reasonable breeze but again simliar to the first half, some wasteful shots going wide which were sloppy at times. Keniry opened the second half scoring from placed ball with Kieran Lane getting himself on the scoresheet in the 35th minute. A sucker punch by Charleville as they converted a goal in the 44th minute after some sloppy defending. Good replies from Ryan McCarthy & Matthew Murphy added further scores at the end of the third quarter to reduce the margin back down to eight points but the hosts closed out the game well even though Killeagh did finish strong with four of the last five points in the game, a pair from Eoghan Keniry and two injury time points from Gary Leahy but a bit of colour to the scoreboard but some opportunities were left behind us early in the game. Saying that, undoubtedly Charleville were the better side on the day. We currently sit in fourth position in the Division 1 table. Killeagh’s next league game will be a home game against St. Finbarr’s on Sunday 8th March at 2pm (Time subject to confirmation).

Team: Colin Walsh; Cathal Fitzgibbon, Philip O’Neill, Allen Keniry; Ryan McCarthy, Cian Fogarty, Killian Treacy; Matthew Murphy, Keane Kelly Budds; Kieran Lane, Andrew Leahy, Aaron Walsh; Eoghan Keniry, Gary Leahy, Sean Walsh. Subs Used: Ciarán O’Rourke, Padraig Leahy, Shane Smiddy, Luke Fogarty.

Rebel Óg East Minor Football League Division 2

Killeagh/Itas 2-7 Whitechurch 1-9

Our minor footballers got their 2020 Division 2 Football League campaign off to a good start with a somewhat fortuitous win over a good Whitechurch side in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Saturday evening last. Played under lights for most of the game, this was a very close contest throughout, with the hosts on top in the first half and Whitechurch on top for most of the second. At half time, we led by 1-5 to 0-4, thanks to Christian Coughlan’s fine solo goal on five minutes and points by Paudie Mackey, Christian and Ciaran Leahy and a brace from Ciaran O’Rourke. In truth we could have been further ahead but for some wayward shooting.

The second half saw Whitechurch dominate for the opening quarter during which time they scored 1-02 without reply to lead for the first time. Ciaran Leahy’s second point squared it up before Whitechurch went ahead again. Paudie Mackey kicked a free from the right corner to level it once more on 54 minutes and when Ciaran O’Rourke’s goal effort was well saved by the Whitechurch goalkeeper, Rory Motherway was in the right place to finish the ball to the net. Two late points by Whitechurch reduced the margin to one, but we held out to secure the points by the minimum margin. Next up we travel to the city to play Mayfield on Sunday next March 1st at 4:30 p.m.

Team: Conor Meade; Cormac Fitzpatrick, Robbie Treacy, Aaron Fitzgibbon; Remy Bernard, David Collins, Daniel Doherty; Ciaran Leahy, Christian Coughlan; Dale McMahon, Evan Lane, Paudie Mackey; Padraig Landers, Ciaran O’Rourke, Eoin Brenner. Subs: Ben Budds, Brian Murphy, Rory Motherway, Ben Fogarty.

Rebel Óg Central Premier 2A Under 15 Football League

Killeagh/Itas 6-2 St. Michaels 4-4

On Saturday evening last, Killeagh/Itas took on St Michael's in their Under 15 Football League in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. It was an early start to the season after the long exciting one they had in 2019. But these boys were bursting for road so much so a minute was not gone in the game when Pierce Geary rattled the net what a start. Pierce scored four goals for himself in this game. Jason Harte & Martin Power with the other goals saw Killeagh/Itas win by 6-2 to 4-4. We had Fionn Murphy pull off a mighty save from a penalty in goal with Colm Leahy & Dylan McCarthy flying in the middle of the park. Overall, great team work and display from the boys. Well done. This bunch of lads play their 2nd round game away from home vs Midleton next Sunday 1st March at 4:30pm.

The Killeagh Healthy Clubs Project in association with Killeagh GAA have been ‘lighting up’ for the months of January & February every Thursday since January 9th and we finish it off this Thursday February 27th from 7pm until 8:30pm for all in your family and everyone in the local community to take advantage of walking around our facilities. Last week, another big crowd of excess 100 people joining us walking, jogging or running over 500km between them. Let’s make both those figures bigger this Thursday for week 8. And as you saw last week, we are finished our work on our new pathway which is on the outside of our new perimeter fencing of the main field. It is virtually complete only to clean up a few bits around it, but doesn’t it look wonderful adjoining our new fencing!

For our walkers, one full lap on the new pathway around our field is exactly 500m, so if you complete 10 laps, that is 5KM (the same distance as our Road Race next Sunday, March 1st)!! It will be a great way and incentive to get fit for the year 2020 ahead. We want everyone to come and join for Killeagh GAA Lights Up 2020!

So, do you want to get moving and active this New Year, but you have nowhere to go? Do you find it hard to find a safe and well-lit area to go for a walk, run or a jog during the dark winter & spring months? Well, Killeagh GAA club has the answer! Why not join us for a walk ‘n’ talk with your friends or family and call in after for a cuppa or some fruit to keep you entertained on the walk, all for FREE!! We ask all members to attend if possible! Remember this is our last official week so why not make the best of it while available!

The Killeagh Healthy Clubs 4 Mile Road Race (under an AAI Permit & in association with Youghal A.C.) will take place on March 1st, starting on Cork Road heading towards Mogeely, the anti-clockwise circuit turns down left for Garrenjames and heads back for the GAA Headquarters where the finish is right outside the GAA Club entrance.

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast.

Our 49th Healthy Clubs Project Monthly Walk, held on Sunday February 23rd, saw an enthusiastic group of 20 walkers, led by Michael Griffin, head to the edge of our parish and county bounds in North Rearour, near Tallow, for an adventurous trek around local forestry. The weather was fine, the company pleasant, and the terrain mildly challenging, leading to a very entertaining morning walk for all present. Thanks to Michael for being the ‘guide on the side’, making sure nobody went astray. The sight of multiple clusters of frog spawn in the trackside puddles gave an indication as to the remoteness of the terrain. Next up we head to Ballyhoura Hills, north of Mitchelstown, for a slightly more challenging trek on Sunday March 15th, meeting at the Firgrove Hotel in Mitchelstown at 9:45am. Come join us if you can.

The following are the planned walks for the year;
