KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, February 16th 2020

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

Our opening game of the RedFM Division 1 Hurling League which was scheduled to take place in Páirc Uí Chinnéide last Sunday against Na Piarsaigh was postponed due to the Orange Weather Warning. This game has been rescheduled to take place on Tuesday 18th February at 7:45pm in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. This will be quickly followed up with an away game against Charleville next Sunday morning, 23rd February at 11:30am.

Our Senior Hurling team over the next few weeks we have some big games upcoming. Do please support the lads in these big games.

The East Cork Under 21 Football Championship returns next weekend when our game against Carraig na bhFear is due to take place next Saturday 22nd February. Final confirmation of the fixture will be announced during the week, please watch out for our social media for confirmation!

Over 160 people turned out in Garryvoe Hotel last Friday to celebrate the successes on the field of our under age teams over the last 18 months. Starting with our Minor team from 2018 who were recognized for their Hurling league success, down through the Under 16’s, 15’s, 14’s & 13’s from the 2019 season. Well done to all the teams who had a successful year on the field and thanks to all the mentors for taking them through 2019. A special word of thanks to our Guest of Honour on the night Seamus Harnedy for joining us on the night.

We start our underage competitions next weekend, let’s hope 2020 will be just as successful and fruitful.

The Killeagh Healthy Clubs Project in association with Killeagh GAA will be ‘lighting up’ for the months of January & February every Thursday from January 9th until February 27th from 7pm until 8:30pm for all in your family and everyone in the local community to take advantage of walking around our facilities. Last week, another big crowd of excess 120 people joining us walking, jogging or running over 600km between them. Let’s make both those figures bigger this Thursday for week 6. And as you saw last week, we are finished our work on our new pathway which is on the outside of our new perimeter fencing of the main field. It is virtually complete only to clean up a few bits around it, but doesn’t it look wonderful adjoining our new fencing!

For our walkers, one full lap on the new pathway around our field is exactly 500m, so if you complete 10 laps, that is 5KM (the same distance as our Road Race on March 1st)!! It will be a great way and incentive to get fit for the year 2020 ahead. We want everyone to come and join for Killeagh GAA Lights Up 2020!

So, do you want to get moving and active this New Year, but you have nowhere to go? Do you find it hard to find a safe and well-lit area to go for a walk, run or a jog during the dark winter months? Well, Killeagh GAA club has the answer! Why not join us for a walk ‘n’ talk with your friends or family and call in after for a cuppa or some fruit to keep you entertained on the walk, all for FREE!! We ask all members to attend if possible!

The Killeagh Healthy Clubs 4 Mile Road Race (under an AAI Permit & in association with Youghal A.C.) will take place on March 1st, starting on Cork Road heading towards Mogeely, the anti-clockwise circuit turns down left for Garrenjames and heads back for the GAA Headquarters where the finish is right outside the GAA Club entrance.

Registration is open from 9:30am on Sunday March 1st, there is walk from 10am, the runners will get underway at 11am. There are ample parking facilities at the registration headquarters at Killeagh GAA Club. There will be plenty changing & showering facilities for both Men & Women and there will be catering afterwards for all finishers in the clubhouse.

Once again, we would like to thank our main sponsor, Niall Guerin Construction for his continued sponsorship of the 4 Mile Road Race. There are plenty of prizes in all categories both male and female as well as some spot prizes afterwards. Entry is just €10 per person and for insurance reasons you must be 16 years or older on the day of the race to take part.

Many thanks to all who registered and to the large team of helpers on the day. If you missed registration, you can do so at the clubhouse on Tuesday 18th between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Contact Colman Motherway for further information.

A huge thank you to all our Silver and Gold Supporters Club members who have contributed so much to helping to keep our club afloat year on year. All those Silver & Gold Supporters of the club will get a ‘Killeagh GAA Supporters Club Car Sticker’ over the next few weeks. If you want to be included in this draw each year, please contact Tim Crotty, Colman Motherway or any committee member regarding this important fundraiser for the club.

Our recently refurbished Gym is available to use by any club member who pay €50 per year (€25 for Students or OAP’s) on top of your regular membership. You can pay any club officer at any time before the end of February. Our Facial Recognition system has been built in this past week, so from now on access will be made to each member upon payment. No person will be allowed enter the Gym without paying the above fee. Our CCTV is being upgraded over the next few weeks also.

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast.
