East Cork Division 1 Football League

Lisgoold 0-11 Erins Own 1-06

Our junior footballers got our new season under way on Sunday morning in Pairc Lios gCúl. In heavy underfoot conditions, the lads started quickly and had an early goal chance but Bill Whelan has unlucky to have his shot deflected over the bar. With midfield dominant and the half forwards running hard at the Erins Own defence, Lisgoold took control of proceedings however early season rustiness meant that they could not convert their dominance into scores.

The second half started much the same, with Lisgoold now playing with the wind, they continued to pressure the Erins Own defence. A penalty was rewarded after Cormac Hallahan was tripped from behind when straight through on goal. Cormac, dusted himself down and he took the resulting penalty. Despite a sweet strike into the bottom corner, the Erins Own keeper managed to get down to the ball and pull off a fine save. Again Lisgoold, pushed hard to add to the scoreboard but could not pull away. In the final 10 minutes, Erins Own staged a late resurgence as the Lisgoold lads began to tire and, after some sloppy defending, managed to score a goal to set up a tense finish. The lads managed to hold out for the last few minutes to win by 2 points.

While the win was deserved, the players and management were well aware that there is still a lot more to do. One of the big takeaways from the match was that 5 players from last seasons U18 team got a run out, with Cormac Hallahan putting in a particularly impressive shift.
