Heart break for Imokilly as U.C.C. win in extra time
15 August, 2008
They say that the replay is never as good as the 1st game well this was a mighty game of hurling hard fast and tough and unlike the last night plenty scores.
As Eddie Engright, John Flavin and Paddy O Regan pointed as the barony rushed into a three point lead after nine minutes but within six more minutes the College were five points to the good as Halbert and Hartnett landed five points between them and in between a major from Graham Mulcahy (Killmallock). O Regan stopped the rot with a free.
Halbert and Hartnett replied for the College as Ronan Spillane and O Regan pointed for Imokilly. The College were now in full flight and looked very dangerous especially Aidan Harte (Gort) playing at full forward as he finished with two points to see the college ahead at the brake 1-9 to 0-6
On resumption Imokilly were again first from the blocks with Brendan Coleman now at centre back and the excellent Noel O Riordan at full back and young Martin Hickey hurling out of his skin the barony settled also Pat O Brien moving to mid field helped
Points from O Regan (2) Ring and Engright had Imokilly back in a two point game. Harte pulled one back before points from Ring and Spillane left the minimum between the sides a brace of points from Mulcahy and one from Harte pushed the college four clear again as we entered the last quarter another O Regan free followed by a mighty point from Brendan Coleman and Brendan Ring and again it was a one point game with ten left on the clock. Halbert made it two points as time ran out then a miss it free from O Regan which Trevor O Keeffe broke to Flavin who made no mistake and rattled the net suddenly Imokilly were ahead.
A mistake in the Imokilly backline lead to a point from John Crowley game level again then to Imokillys dismay Harte pointed again deep in injury time. Imokilly got their chance and O Regan pointed a placed ball to force extra time as the light faded badly. The barony again started the better with what else but an O Regan free to lead again. Then a 30 m free for the collage up came Anthony Nash and he clung it. This was a blow Imokilly never recovered from despite points from O Keeffe and two form O Regan. The college were now in full flight and ran out easy winners in the end.
