Castlelyons GAA Club

10 December, 2019

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 2.12.19.

Castlelyons Club Bar requires refurbishment.

Back in 1904 in order to cater for the registration of clubs in Ireland and purposes connected with same the King’s most Excellent Majesty with advice from others brought in an a most favorable Act of Parliament.   The Act has stood the test of time as it helps enhance gatherings at the clubs for social events through the sale of excisable liquor to the members and visitors who are invited or in the company of members. Some forty years ago our own Club applied for registration and were granted a certificate.  There were some hectic days and nights in the Club through the years as we went through the gears of Junior B hurling to a county senior semifinal with all the accolades in between, success in football, and the squash going well also.

In more recent times one of the squash courts was adjusted to dressing rooms and the changing areas to a meeting room with the addition of a teen café while the bar area has remained the same over the years.  A recent inspection by the Fire Officer has identified several fire safety concerns.  Accordingly, a major overhaul of the bar area is now necessary.  Our chairman has outlined a blended approach of remedial works to the Fire Officer which has been accepted.  However, there some redline issues which must be addressed requiring expertise and cash investment resulting in the bar remaining closed on a temporary basis at least.

Next week’s draw will be held on Monday 16th December at 9.30pm at Pedlars Rock. The Jackpot is still €20,000 and could be yours for just €2.  We would ask all our patrons to support us and especially those in the Adult, Juvenile and Camogie Clubs.  The results of the Club Lotto are published on both the Avondhu and social media.  Thanks to all.

East Cork GAA Convention.

The recent East Cork GAA Convention was held in Killeagh and a full house attended.  Michael O Brien gave an excellent report on all games played and drew attention to one issue.  This is the difficulties in acquiring venues for games, especially neutral venues for championship matches.  He asked all clubs to make their venues available if possible. Ms Avril Geary, St Ita’s who was elected as the new public relations officer for East Cork GAA. A presentation was made to the outgoing PRO, Shane Supple by Donal O Keeffe, Chairman.  Donal thanked him for his tremendous work and wished him well in his new position as the new secretary of Rebel Óg.  Shane is also manager of Imokilly football team this year.

Colman’s in Harty Cup Quarter Final for 2010.

St Colman’s take on last year’s beaten finalists Christian Brothers College in an all-Cork quarter final Harty Cup clash.  The reigning champions Midleton CBS will meet De La Salle Waterford after the last eight draws were made on the Munster colleges stage. It will be a repeat of last January’s semi-final tie which was won in dramatic fashion by a late Midleton CBS goal. There will be all-county ties elsewhere as well with Clare duo St Flannan’s Ennis and St Joseph’s Tulla facing off while Tipperary pair Thurles CBS and Our Lady’s Templemore will also meet.  These games are due to be played on the 8th January 2020.

Best wishes to the Rovers.

Best wishes to our neighbours Bride Rovers who are down to play St Finbarrs in the Premier 2 Under 21 hurling Final on Saturday 14th December at 6pm.  The Rovers are motoring well and have the hurlers to take this one.
