UNDER 16 FOOTBALLERS FALL SHORT IN FOOTBALL FINAL

Rebel Óg Fé 16 County Football Division 2 Championship Final

Grenagh 1-15 Killeagh/Ita’s 3-7

A thrilling game of football, played at breakneck speed by two talented sides, resulted in a victory for Grenagh over a brave and battling Killeagh/Ita’s team in Pairc Ui Chaoimh’s immaculate 4G astro pitch on Friday evening last. Both sides gave 100% effort from referees Alan O’Connor’s first whistle to last, and Grenagh’s ability to kick scores while they were more dominant in possession, in the ten minutes before half time and the fifteen minutes after, was ultimately the difference between the two teams. In contrast, Killeagh/Ita’s were very dominant for the first ten minutes but failed to convert a couple of early chances, before Paudie Mackey’s first goal (a brilliant 50 yard run and finish low to the left corner) put us a point up – 1-0 to 0-2. Paudie added a point on 15 minutes and Eoin Brenner’s score a minute later put us ahead by 1-2 to 0-4. Paudie’s second point levelled the game, 1-3 to 0-6 after 23 minutes before Grenagh took control and in the final minutes of the half they scored four points to just one in response – a free from Paudie. A three point game then at half time – 0-10 to 1-4.

Grenagh were very much on top in the third quarter and added four points without reply, although we did have a couple of wides in our few attacks. A Grenagh goal on 46 minutes seemed to spell game over as they now led by 1-14 to 1-4. However, these Killeagh lads are a resilient bunch, and they rallied all over the pitch – with the defence tightening up considerably and our forwards going all out. We got a sniff of a comeback with a brilliantly-lobbed goal by Paudie on 54 minutes and when he scored his third goal straight from the kick-out, the gap was just four and Grenagh were rattled. Dylan McCarthy and David Buckley, both very effective substitutions, kicked a point each and with four minutes left, the game was back in the melting pot with just a two-point deficit – 3-6 to 1-14. Grenagh steadied the ship, however, and didn’t panic, scoring a point (their first in 14 minutes) with time almost up. Paudie got one back (his final score in a remarkable 3-4, with all but one point from play), but we just ran out of clock and Grenagh held on to complete a county Under 16 double.

Hard luck but well done to our panel and the management team of Johnny Brenner, Declan Fogarty and John Lane for a very successful year, while big thanks must also go to John Lane, Brendan Wallace and Mike O’Sullivan for their sponsorship of county final tops for the whole panel – a fabulous gesture!

Team: Conor Meade; Ben Budds, Rory Lynch, Colm Landers; Ben Fogarty, Jamie Fogarty, Colm Treacy; George Walsh Wallace, Aaron Fitzgibbon; Daniel Walsh, Eoin Brenner, Dale McMahon; Rory Motherway, Paudie Mackey, Evan Lane. Subs: Dylan McCarthy, David Buckley, Tommy Morrison, Danny Fitzgerald, Colm Leahy.

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast.

Our most challenging walks were climbing Carrauntoohill, Galtee Mór, and a group of 30 travelled to Spain to complete a section of the Camino de Santiago. New members are always welcome, if you are interested in joining, please contact Liz Sinclair 087-6137393!
