Rebel Óg Central Premier 2A Hurling Challenge Cup Final

Killeagh/Ita’s 3-18 Bandon 1-11

Our Under 15 hurlers ended the year in fine style with an emphatic victory over a strong Bandon team in the Premier 2A Hurling Challenge Cup Final on the 4G Astro pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday evening last. On a dry, cool evening, our teamwork, shooting and defending were all excellent from the start, although Bandon did get the opening point. Ben Walsh was first to score from the right wing, while Daniel Walsh got the first of his eight points from placed balls (a 100% record) shortly after. Ben Walsh then turned provider with a pass to Conor Meade, who raised the first green flag of the evening. By the quarter hour we led by 1-5 to 0-5, while our defence was battling hard to keep the Bandon attack at bay, with Pierse Geary in goal, Darragh O’Leary, Ben Budds and Ben Fogarty all very prominent. The second quarter was very even, with Colm Leahy and Barry Walsh also getting points from play, and Ciaran Brennan very unlucky when his fine effort was saved. Bandon added their own late scores to leave us ahead by 1-10 to 0-8 at half time. We turned to play with a slight breeze advantage in the second half and got off to a good start when Ben Walsh pointed after excellent work from Ben Fogarty. Barry Walsh, who had a brilliant second half, added another point on 41 minutes, before Dylan McCarthy, (excellent at midfield all through, as was Tommy Morrison), scored a fine goal on 45 minutes, giving us a 2-16 to 0-8 lead. Bandon battled strongly, getting their own goal on 51 minutes and a few other close calls followed, but our defence held firm, with Sean Meade, Diarmuid Buckley and Rory Motherway also prominent in this period. Colm Leahy’s late goal was our final score, and there was time for Darragh O’Brien and Jack O’Connor to be introduced for the final minutes. Brian Coniry’s final whistle gave this team their first ever County title, one which was well deserved on the night. Well done to bainisteoir Martin Fitzgerald and Dermot Motherway on a successful end to their campaign.

Team: Pierse Geary; Diarmuid Buckley, Sean Meade, Darragh O’Leary; Ben Fogarty, Ben Budds, Rory Motherway; Tommy Morrison, Dylan McCarthy (1-1); Ben Walsh (0-3), Daniel Walsh (0-9, 0-8f), Barry Walsh (0-2); Ciaran Brennan, Conor Meade (1-1), Colm Leahy (1-2). Subs used: Darragh O’Brien and Jack O’Connor.

Our under 16 footballers have one game remaining with the County Football Championship up for grabs next Friday night in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. They take on Grenagh in the Rebel Óg County Division 2 Football Final on the 4G pitch with throw-in at 8pm. Please show your support to the lads next Friday!

The inaugural National Recreational GAA Blitz took place in the GAA Centre at the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown, Dublin on Saturday last, with 13 hurling teams and 5 football teams participating. This historic event comes after great work done by our own Colm Crowley and others in establishing social GAA networks around the country, providing opportunities for men aged 35 and over to play hurling and football in a non-competitive, non-combative manner. The blitz was very well organised, run under the Healthy Clubs Project banner, and saw a Killeagh team play against five other teams – Clontarf and Naomh Olaf from Dublin, Erins Own from Castlecomer in Kilkenny, Naas, and Blarney.

Well done to our panel and dedicated mentor Liam Foley and for the record the panel was Pat Walsh, Padraig McGrath, Johnny Brenner, Johnny Clifford, Barry O’Driscoll, Larry Collins, Seamus Considine, Conor Murphy, Cormac de Fréin, Tom Sheehan and Colman Motherway. We hope to hold another social hurling evening under lights in Páirc Uí Chinnéide in the coming weeks and one more by day during the Christmas season. All men (Dads & Lads) over 30 are welcome, as long as you don’t take it too seriously!

In the next few weeks, we will have a mass for deceased members in Killeagh Church. Details are to be confirmed with Fr. Tim Hazelwood, PP of Killeagh & Inch. We hope all members and families of the club can be represented.

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast.

Our most challenging walks were climbing Carrauntoohill, Galtee Mór, and a group of 30 travelled to Spain to complete a section of the Camino de Santiago. New members are always welcome, if you are interested in joining, please contact Liz Sinclair 087-6137393!
