UNDERS 13’s CLAIM FIRST PRIZE IN HOME COUNTY FINAL

Rebel Óg Central Fé 13 Premier 2 County Football Final

Killeagh/Ita’s 8-2 Carrigaline 4-9

Killeagh/Ita’s Under 13 team made history under lights on their home patch in Páirc Uí Chinnéide, on Saturday evening last when they defeated Carrigaline in a cracking Premier 2 County Football Final, thereby qualifying to participate in the highest grade, Premier 1, for the Fé 14 2020 season, the first Killeagh/Ita’s football team to play at this grade since the advent of Rebel Óg Central in 2012. This game showcased high quality football, excellent defending and teamwork, and scintillating score-taking from both sides. The X-factor for Killeagh/Ita’s was their ability to work and finish goals, with Sean Meade the destroyer in chief. He raised green flags on 2, 7, 13 and 20 minutes, while Carrigaline had goals of their own on 5, 16 and 25 minutes, so that by half-time the teams were level, 4-1 to Killeagh-Ita’s (Fionn Murphy the point scorer) and 3-4 to Carrigaline.

Carrigaline took the lead for the final time on 32 minutes with their fifth point, before Sean got going again, goaling on 33, 40 and 43 minutes. With Ben Walsh, Ethan O’Driscoll and Harry Connon leading the defensive lines, Carrigaline’s dangerous attacks were limited, and the lead was four points on the three quarter hour mark – 7-2 to 4-7 – after Barry Walsh had kicked our second point, a brilliant long-range effort. The scoring rate then dried up, with wides and good saves on both sides. The margin was reduced to three before Colm Cowhig got on the rebound of a great save from the Carrigaline ‘keeper and finished to the net, giving us a deserved but hard-earned victory over a gallant opposition. Well done to the whole panel and to the joint managers Richard Lynch and Conor Murphy, who must now prepare for a Premier 2 County Hurling Final away to Youghal next Saturday.

Team: Fionn Brennan; Oran Cunningham, Harry Connon, Michael O’Donovan; Darragh Prenter, Ben Walsh, Ethan O’Driscoll; Barry Walsh, Mark Buttimer; Sean Lynch, Fionn Murphy, Conor Burns; Michael Doherty, Sean Meade, Aidan McNamee. Subs used: Andrew Brenner, Liam Og Power, Colm Cowhig, Cormac Deane.

UNDER 16’s GRIND OUT A RESULT AGAINST THE SAINTS

Rebel Óg East Fé 16 Division 1 Hurling League Semi-Final

Killeagh/Ita’s 0-11 St. Catherine’s 0-3

Back in August, St. Catherine’s beat our Under 16 hurlers in an exciting East Division 1 championship semi-final, on their way to winning the East final and going all the way to a County Final. In the intervening weeks, our focus had been very much on football as our team went on something of a run of their own which has them now preparing for a County Football Final. So, when the teams met in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Wednesday last, nobody was sure which way the match might go. On a very wet night,

with conditions not suitable for free-flowing hurling, our team came out on top, with an excellent defensive performance – outstanding displays from David Buckley, Conor Meade, Ben Budds and Jamie Fogarty in particular – and an ability to finish from play and frees when required. Stand-out performances from Eoin Brenner (two points from play and brilliant effort in winning much ‘dirty ball’ in the centre of the field), Aaron Fitzgibbon and Colm Treacy were also vital in giving us enough possession to keep the scoreboard ticking over and limiting opportunities for the Saints. Next up we play the winners of the other semi-final between Kiltha Óg and Cobh which is to be played next weekend.

Team: Pierse Geary; David Buckley, Conor Meade, Cormac Fitzpatrick; Ben Budds, Jamie Fogarty, Rory Lynch; Eoin Brenner, Aaron Fitzgibbon; Colm Landers, George Walsh, Daniel Walsh; Dale McMahon, Colm Treacy, Rory Motherway. Subs used: Dylan McCarthy, Ben Fogarty, Ciaran Brennan, Danny Fitzgerald, Tommy Morrison, Darragh O’Leary.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALLERS FALL SHORT IN HOME FINAL

Rebel Óg East Fé 14 Division 2 Football League Final

Mayfield 6-8 Killeagh/Ita’s 5-5

The treble was on if our Under 14s could win the league final on Sunday afternoon in Killeagh, but a fine Mayfield team held on for a close but deserved victory. The damage was done in the first half when Mayfield banged in five goals to lead by 5-6 to 3-1 at the short whistle (Sean Meade, Colm Leahy and Pierse Geary with our goals, Ben Walsh with a point). A few changes at half-time brought renewed vigour to our team for the second half, with Pierse and Ben kicking quick points, and then Sean bagging another goal on 37 minutes. Killeagh/Ita’s had all the possession and Mayfield were rattled – when a further point from Ben and then a quick point and goal from impressive substitute Conor Burns reduced the margin to just a point, 5-6 to 5-5 – a turnaround looked possible. Mayfield steadied the ship, however, and finished strongly with 1-2 without reply to add the Under 14 league title to the Under 16 title they had won the previous day. This concludes a very busy season for our Under 14s who added the East Division 2 Hurling League title last week to two National Féile titles in June. A year to remember for all!

Huge thanks to Seamus Considine and his team behind the scenes which include Deccie Long, Pat Walsh, Pauline Meade, Conor Murphy, Richie Lynch, Edel Ryan & Breda Buckley and all the parents, the club, the supporters and this amazing bunch of lads for a fantastic year for bringing us all over the country. Well done and keep up the great work and hopefully more silverware will be added over the upcoming seasons.

Team: Michael Doherty; Daniel Griffin, Liam Considine, Harry Connon; Sean O’Riordan, Ben Walsh, Jack O’Connor; Diarmuid Buckley, Colm Leahy; Darragh O’Brien, Dylan McCarthy, Martin Power; Pierse Geary, Sean Meade, Ruairi Mackey. Subs used: Colm Cowhig, Conor Burns, Fionn Murphy, Michael O’Donovan.

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast. Our most challenging walks were climbing Carrauntoohill, Galtee Mór, and a group of 30 travelled to Spain to complete a section of the Camino de Santiago. New members are always welcome, if you are interested in joining, please contact Liz Sinclair 087-6137393!
