Premier 1 Under 21 Hurling Championship

Killeagh/Ita's 1-17 Fr. O'Neill's 1-11

A solid, if patchy at times, performance saw Killeagh-Ita's defeat reigning champions and neighbours Fr. O'Neill's in the opening round of this year's Premier 1 U21 championship in Copper Alley, Youghal on a bright Saturday afternoon. Credit must go to the Youghal club for making their pitch available and playable after a 24-hour deluge in advance of the game. Both sides struggled in the opening half with their accuracy, with wides from play and frees limiting the scoring rate. Cathal Deane and Dan Hickey, our St. Ita's duo who were both excellent throughout, got early points, while Ryan McCarthy found his radar and hit over five first half points, from placed balls and from play. Killian Treacy, Keane Kelly Budds and Dylan Hogan were others very prominent in the first half, but our return with wind advantage was not quite up to the mark, with a total of nine wides somewhat spoiling good team play. Ger Millerick took over free-taking duties for O'Neill's and kept them in touch and a six point gap at half time, 0-9 to 0-3. It was probably a fair reflection of the match. O'Neill's started well in the second half, getting the opening score, but a fine goal from Richie Long, cutting in from the left corner, gave us a bit of breathing space and a gap which was never less than 5 points for the remainder of the game. David Ogbebor, who troubled the O'Neill's defence all through with his strong running, added a great point, while at the other end, Aaron Walsh in goal, Eoin Fitzgibbon and Kevin Murphy were all very dominant in the second half. The permutations from here on are uncertain with so many 'back door' matches to be played, but it appears that we are now in a quarter final, perhaps in two or three weeks' time.

Team: Aaron Walsh; Richie Landers, Dylan Hogan, Eoin Fitzgibbon; Cathal Deane, Kevin Murphy, Cathal Fitzgibbon; Keane Kelly Budds, Dan Hickey; Sean Walsh, David Ogbebor, Ryan McCarthy; Richie Long, Andrew Leahy, Killian Treacy. Subs used: Jack O'Rourke, Padraig Leahy, Luke Fogarty, Ciaran Leahy.

The U14 Killeagh/Itas hurlers played Fr O Neills in the league final last Saturday in Aghavine. It was a fine fresh morning and what followed was a good hard game with the score at half time 1-5 to 1-4 to Killeagh. The second half was played at an increased pace with a lot at stake for both teams and neither team wanting to lose. Hard hits, blocks, hooks, some great hurling and even better scores from both sides and even a few yellow cards for good luck!

On the day, Killeagh/Itas came out on top, winning the game 6-8 to 3-10. It was a great win and an all round team effort from everyone involved. Another trophy to add to the growing number these great bunch of lads have gathered this year! Well done to all! This bunch of lads have one game of Football left for the year, a Football League Final next Saturday, please turn out and show your support.

Last Monday, our Under 13 hurlers took on Carrigtwohill away from home in the Premier 2 County Semi Final. Killeagh/Itas were on top from the get go with some fine early scores. We were assisted by a favourable wind in the first half with a scoreboard of 3-5 to 0-2 in our favour by the half time whistle.

Our Determination, Hard work and skill continued in the second half with some great passing and teamwork throughout. We witnessed more great scores, definite defending and super saves by Mark Buttimer. A Penalty taken by Sean Meade rattled the net to add to our dominance. A fine display of hurling from Ben Walsh leading from the back line and impressive work from Fionn Murphy and Conor Burns in Centre field reinforced our performance. The Final Score was Killeagh/Itas 6-7 Carrigtwohill 1-5. They now face Youghal in the County final in a fortnight’s time.

Scores for Killeagh: Sean Meade 6-3, Ben Walsh 0-3, Fionn Murphy 0-1.

This fine bunch of dual stars have already made us proud this year and now have two County Finals to work for under the management of Conor Murphy and Richard Lynch.

They have a football county final next Saturday vs Carrigaline with details to be confirmed. So far, they have gone unbeaten in 11 games. In their 9 league games, they scored 69-77 (31 pt avg per game) and only conceded 19-37 (10 pt avg per game), while in the two knockout games, they have scored 18-9 while conceding only 11-17. This is a superb record so far. We ask you over the next two weekends to support these young lads in the biggest game of their young careers to date. Stay tuned to our social media for details of fixtures.

Thanks to everyone who made the weekend so successful in whatever part you played in by putting in work or participating in something. It was broadcast on RTE’s Nationwide who were in Páirc Uí Chinnéide recording over the weekend and showed a 15 minute segment last Friday 25th October. Did you see yourself on D’Telly?? If you missed it why not catch-up on the RTÉ Player and see what your local Healthy Club gets up to.

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast. Our most challenging walks were climbing Carrauntoohill, Galtee Mór, and a group of 30 travelled to Spain to complete a section of the Camino de Santiago. New members are always welcome Contact Liz Sinclair 087-6137393 to join up!
