Carrigtwohill GAA Club Notes 21-10-19

Senior Hurling Championship

Cork Senior Hurling Championship Semi-final Carrigtwohill 0-11 Glen Rovers 0-26 in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday, October 6th Referee: Cathal McAllister (Aghada)

Carrig’s improbable run to the County Senior Hurling Championship semi-final came to an end against a well-drilled Glen Rovers side.

The Glen came flying out of the blocks and were 12 points up in the first quarter before Carrig settled. Carrig battled ably from there on out but the damage was done early on as the Glen ran out comfortable winners. Liam Gosnell scored 10 of Carrig’s points (9 frees) with Jay Horgan getting the other.

Despite this defeat our hurlers can look back on a fantastic year that saw them recover from a heavy defeat in the opening round to emerge victorious over Killeagh, Bandon and Ballyhea. This was our first time back in a Senior County semi-final since 2011 and everyone involved in Carrigtwohill GAA is rightly proud of the efforts of these lads this year. The club would like to thank the players and the management team of Keith Ricken, Marty McConville, John Horgan, Jim O’Connor and Mick Boland for their time and endeavour this year. Carrig will be playing top grade Premier Senior hurling in 2020.

U21 Hurling Championship

East Cork U21 A Hurling Championship Semi-final Carrigtwohill 1-17 Aghada 3-14 in Carrig on Friday, October 18th. Referee: Arthur Murphy (Killeagh)

Our u21 hurlers were defeated in the semi-final of the East Cork Championship by Aghada in Carrig on Friday night.

Carrig got off to a great start and were 0-6 to 0-1 up inside the first 10 minutes. John Carroll (0-2), Ollie Baverstock, Liam Gosnell, Sean Walsh and James Mulcahy were the scorers. Aghada pulled it back to within a point after 20 minutes before Baverstock goaled for Carrig which was quickly followed by a second Sean Walsh point. Aghada then found the net to keep in touch. Carrig went in at half-time ahead 1-9 to 1-7 with Daire Crotty and Gosnell (free) rounding out Carrig’s total.

Carrig and Aghada traded scores for the first 20 minutes after the restart with Liam Gosnell 0-2 (0-1f), Mulcahy and Walsh getting the points. Aghada then took the lead for the first time in the match when they got their 2nd goal of the match with 10 minutes to go. Another Gosnell free brought Carrig level; 1-14 to 2-11. Aghada notched their 3rd goal to go back in front but Carrig again responded to

draw level with 2 more Gosnell frees and a point from Daire McCann. However, it was Aghada who finished the stronger scoring the last 3 points and Carrig couldn’t work a goal opportunity.

The club would like to thank all of the players and the management team of Michael Fitzgerald, Tomás Hogan, Robbie White, Eoin O’Mahony, JJ Barry, Peter Furlong and Conor Healy for their efforts this year.

Scorers: L. Gosnell 0-7 (0-5f), O. Baverstock 1-1, S. Walsh 0-3, J. Mulcahy, J. Carroll 0-2 each, D. McCann, D. Crotty 0-1 each.
