Erins Own 1-7 Glenville 1-6

Erins Own opened their 2010 league campaign with a hard earned one point victory over Glenville in Glenville. Under the guidance of a new management team of Seán Power (manager),Shea Fahy (coach)and selectors Diarmuid Cunningham and Pat Fitzgerald we look forward to challanging for trophies this year. It was great to see 26 players togging out for this match and a few more were unavailable for various reasons.

Glenville opened the scoring with a point in the 1st minute but Erins Own replied with a great goal from Cian O Connor in the 2nd minute and we never fell behind after that score. Shane Murphy increased the lead with a point from a 45 on 11 minutes but we conceded a goal against the run of play on 17 minutes. Colm Coakley, Kieran Murphy and Patrick Walsh added to our tally to leave us in the lead on a score of 1-4 to 1-1 at half time. We could have further ahead but we were denied goals by some good saves by the Glenville keeper and the cross field wind made scoring opportunities difficult.

Glenville were on top in the opening minutes and two quick points have the deficit down to the bare minimum after 7 minutes. However Erins Own weathered the storm and when David Smiddy scored a fine point in the 10th minute we regained our composure and Shane Murphy stretched our lead to three points with a pointed free minutes later. Substitute Diarmuid Ryng was very impressive when introduced and capped a fine performance with a point after 43 minutes. This proved to be our last score of the day and we had to withstand a late rally from Glenville as they scored three points in the last five minutes. Overall we deserved our victory with a good team performance.
